Zippo lighter tip

If you use a regular Zippo or one with the Zippo pipe insert which takes the liquid lighter fluid, here is a tip. After refilling the insert, rub a thin coating of Vaseline or petroleum jelly on the outside of the insert before putting it back in the case. This will help prevent the fluid from evaporating or leaking and reduce the interval between refills.

@PappyJoe. Great tip, will have to give that a try. I will recommend taking the time with a new zippo lighter to in do all the packing and expand the wick. It seems that the majority of the zippos I open the wick seems to be scrunched up in the top third of the insert. I find the wick does a better job when it has full access to the insert.

As a zippo user, I really appreciate the tips! I've always been a soft flame butane and matches person in the past, but wind has really been a problem smoking outside, so I got my first zippo a few months ago. The evaporation is a killer, so I will try the Vaseline for sure!

The past zippos I have bought the wick was shoved all the way up to the top. Here is a lint to a picture of how they should look in side the insert

Steps I take is remove insert
Remove screw sprint and flint(this makes it easier to removed the filt pad
Remove rayon balls and wick(not all are badly packed in to the top of the insert)
Re-insert wick after straightening it
Fold to one side, insert rayon balls to make a layer
Fold wick over that layer, insert more rayon balls
Fold wick back over again insert last set of rayon balls
Replace felt pad
Insert flint and replace screw and spring.
Fill and place insert back in
Use lighter as intended.

Some times I also pull the rayon balls apart to make the layers more uniform. If you ruin or lose a rayon ball you can use a 100% cotton ball in its place.
