Pipe Rack Design

I'm looking for some design ideas.  I'm planning on building a pipe rack for myself but wanted to get input from everyone about the design.  is there anything that you would say is a complete must on your pipe racks or a FAIL on the racks you've seen?  I'm thinking a fairly simple cabinet with the shelves for the pipes and a bigger section at the bottom for jars/tins of tobacco.  I would like to put normal cabinet doors on it, but wanted to get ideas for anything that would enhance the design, or things to stay away from.  Will the doors slow the pipes drying time while they rest?

There are few unique and inexpensive designs online ..I would Google this and see what fits your criteria. One design I am planning on employing uses soft rubber clamps typically advertised as fishing rod holders. One can use them to set pipes in place either in a rack or a board design similar to what one might see in a pipe shop display. With the latter one needs plywood, fabric, soft backing material (between plywood and fabric),a staple gun, the fishing rod holders/clamps, screws etc and if desired wood for a frame, hammer, nails possibly glass sliding doors etc depending on how far one wishes to go. Without going into much detail if on has ever been to a pipe shop one might have seen pipes displayed flat up against a wall gently held in place by an open soft clamp and get the idea. If not Google image a few pipe shops and look carefully for what I am describing.
  • @Darmon Check out the discussion "What is your preferred method for displaying and storing your pipes" on this site. Go all the way back to page 1 and sift through the info available there. Something might "grab" you...

@Darmon the fails I've had in ones I've bought is in the spacing.  It's like they were built for very small bowled straight pipes.  My medium to large bowled bents take up a space and a half in the rack.  Good you are custom building for your collection but also think ahead for potential new pipes later.
  • Don't we have a pipe rack category? Might be some great ideas in there, if my memory serves me correctly people posted a lot of great pictures in there.  I have been thinking of making a metal (stainless Steel) or aluminum rack, have a alliant Milling machine here now so might be a fun project!
Guess my lazy butt needs to search for that category for myself and for Darmon, if someone finds it before me please tag Darmon and myself in a post in that section.

    Thanks
