@drac2485, I would think smoking a pipe while hunting would be more of an advantage than anything. Depending on what you're smoking though I guess. I think a smokey English blend would make for a great cover scent. I read somewhere before that native Americans used to bathe themselves in smoke from a good smokey fire to mask there body odor before going out. I never smoked a pipe while hunting before to try it because I just started smoking a pipe in the spring and haven't smoked cigarettes in 20 years, but I will be trying it out in a couple weeks when in-line starts up.
I've had long time hunters tell me in the past that they would stop smoking cigarettes for 48 hours before going hunting and make sure their hunting clothes were washed to remove any cigarette smell and then rinsed several times before drying in the sun. Their theory was that deer have learned what cigarette smoke is and that it means a human is nearby.
Don't know about smoky English Blends either but my guess would be that it would cause the deer to run the other direction since wild animals are conditioned to run from burning woods.
Yeah I wash my clothes and dry them with earth scent dryer sheets and then I let them sit outside for a week to get that natural smell, have also been known to rake leaves and nuts into a big trash bag after it has aired out and put my clothes in there until I am ready to put them on. Always get a Deer.
@Wolf41035 I've done the bag trick several times but with fresh pine branches.
Every year my wife's uncle carries an old small metal coffee can out with him and builds a small fire in it to keep his fingers warm, "he hates wearing gloves" and every year he's one of the first guys to get a buck... and he smokes like a chimney.
@SuppressedRage if he does that every year they are used to it, I am sure the deer around here would get used to smoking pipe or cigar if I did it all the time in the woods but I just don't have time to train them. lol All joking aside, I like to get back to nature and not have anything with me that smells like humans or cars or trucks, I like to sit in the woods and smell and hear the wood and nature PLUS I hunt for food so I can't take any chances. Each year I hunt I am the first on this farm or surrounding farms to get a deer or two so why chance it. I do know of people on farms that smoke, fart, eat and drink while hunting and again if the deer are used to that and your lucky enough to be upwind and they are down wind it is all good. Hunting is the one time I get out in the woods to just sit and enjoy myself while getting food for the freezer....Who else hunts for food and enjoys the peace and quiet?
I shot a deer last year with a crossbow. I bought a freezer just for the meat that I had processed. I love venison (especially young), but unfortunately my wife can not get over the thought of Bambi suffering (thanks Disney). Anyway, we’ve used all the quality cuts and are working on the ground venison (in chili, spaghetti sauce, etc.) I probably won’t go deer hunting again but could clean-up on squirrels in my neighborhood! Now fish... that’s another story. Love to fish! Plus, smoking a pipe while fishing isn’t an issue!
I dont know about dear every where else but I have been known to sit in the stand enjoyingva bowl while I wait and have had no problem with being noticed as for clothes I will usually wash and hang out side to air dry and bag the them up till ready to use.
My first love, is bowhunting whitetail deer with bow and arrow, primarily with a recurve or longbow. However, I am an avid gun enthusiast, and plan to pickup the gun one day, when my bowhunting days are behind me. I also love to hunt skwerls with my 870, and will hunt wabbits with bow or 870. Doves at 60 MPH with my trusty 870 in September, whet my appetite for the upcoming bow season.
