I like them until I need to tamp... Taking a hot wind cap off doesn't feel very good. Otherwise, there are nice to prevent a mess when in a windy situation. I normally use them when I preload a bowl before leaving the house to keep the tobacco from falling out while transporting.
I have two with hinged wind caps, when I light them, I don't press the caps all the way back down. I can then use the tamp to open the wind cap when I need to.
I have a cheap basket pipe I bought years ago with a hinged wind cap and quit smoking it after a few bowls because with the wind cap closed it changed the flavor of the tobacco, giving the over all smoke a nasty metallic taste. I pulled it down from my pipe rack and tried smoking it again a few days ago to see if anything changed ... it didn't. It's a nice looking pipe so I guess I'll just keep the pipe in my collection for looks but doubt I'll return to it.
Have you tried one of those clip on caps? I use one when I walk in the woods during the dry times that we seem to be running into now a days. They're not brass which most of those capped ones are.
@woodsman Unfortunately where I live there are no real tobacco shops where I might find accessories like a clip on wind cap or even softy bits. I really never thought about using one before because I never had much trouble with the wind when I'm outside smoking. The only reason I bought the pipe with the clipped on wind cap was because it looked pretty cool ... and I was kind of early into pipe collecting, so I thought it would make a nice addition.
@thebadgerpiper A Peterson Silver Hinged Lid pipe is still “on my list”. I have a few with silver rim caps, but not a full hinged lid yet. Those things are few and far between....and are priced accordingly.
