What Pipe Smokers Are Losing...

So while having coffee this morning I logged into tobaccoreviews and did a search to see just what the Sutliff Tobacco Company manufactures for other brands/labels/tobacconist. I've tried being as accurate as possible.

In other places I have posted that out of 80 unopened tins in my possession, I only had 10 that were made by Sutliff or MacBaren. I need to amend that number to 11.
What this is telling me is that I don't smoke that many blends made by Sutliff.

That being said, I am going to miss exploring the Gurkha line of pipe tobaccos that I just discovered.

@leonard - Did I miss any blends?

    Sutliff catered to the aromatic smoker, IMHO
  • There are probably more brand/blend names out there, but I doubt there are more actual blends. For instance: Super Value = Blenders Gold = Smoker Friendly = Admirals Choice.

    Wessex Gold Slices: not sure what that is, but Wessex doesn’t make tobacco, so you’ve already smoked it.

    you’ve also likely smoked anything under Missouri, Iwan, and many others under different names.

    Im sure that there are some unique blends in there, but a lot less than we would like to think.

    Oh, I'm sure there are blends that were just packaged with different labels for different companies.

    I've never smoked Wessex Gold Slice under that name but I saw it listed on a lot of on-line tobacco shops.
  • This is like the passing of an old friend, or for collectors of physical media, it's like a favorite movie or album that's gone out of print.

    Well, I can't disagree, but on the positive side:
    1. We still have our pipes
    2. Blend variety may not be there like it was, but as long as we still have several blends we still enjoy, I for one, will still be happy...

    Its really a drag . Sutliff did make a lot of bends across the board and as luck would have it , MB and Sutliff were the two producers that really did it for me for reasonable money and always in stock blends . Sutliff had some repackage stuff but the amount of unique blends were far greater than the double brand packaging by far . I never got around to cobblestone high spirits because I knew that it was relabeled bulk , as an example , just by the descriptions ... at least I was pretty sure they were

    IRC had some super unique blends that weren't in Sutliffs line up of bulk stuff . I think because IRC created them and at some point in the past and had Sutliff make them for them [ Im guessing ] .  IRC really had it going on , imho . The way they incorporated oriental and latakia into an aromatic was spectacular and I havent had anything even close to those aromatics that they made for IRC . Every producer has their own flavor profile , in a sense , and MB and Sutliff just nailed it . If you happen upon IRC Three Star Bronze , you'll be in for something fantastic ! IRC Old Colonial was maybe one of the great blends . Imagine Carter Hall but way smoother and better . Sadly , I have 1 unopened 7 oz container is all . It was in the top 10 for me

    Anyway , its really kind of depressing to think about . Im guessing the future will have 2 or three producers of pipe tobacco ... or less . I wont be around forever anyway

    I hold no grudge against STG . I think they make some great blends . Actually , I like or love a lot of their products . They got me because I hate C&D , GLP and H&H products . Its a flavor profile thing , along with a a harsh thing , and I just dont smoke any of their products nor will I . Ive tried but they are just pure crap to me

    Tell ya what . PIPESANDCIGARS.COM is a horrid website . I know stg own them now and I only bring it up because maybe they will get that place up to par , as its been sub par and I wouldnt spend any money there for some time now . wvsmokeshop and smokingpipes are the only place left for me because anytime I try to order from IRC , it doesnt seem to want to ship to Georgia for some reason

    Anyway , if STG people read this place .... pipesandcigars sucks ... fix it , just saying

    @Ruffinogold

    It’s a funny thing. I’m primarily a Sutliff guy, and I’ve mostly dealt with P&C since I took up the pipe again in 2017 or thereabouts. I never had a negative experience with their website, and I am quite fond of their hardcopy catalogues.
  • Since I still have an extensive tobacco cellar it's been a while since I've ordered anything new from Pipes & Cigars. But I've always had a positive experience when ordering from them. My orders come in a timely fashion, and their on line and physical catalog has more than enough blends to choose from.
  • For the past two years I have cut back on ordering any tobacco or pipes on line. I haven't stopped completely (it usually an impulse buy when I do) but I have occasionally ordered from P&C. I have never had a problem with getting my order that was their fault. The problems usually is caused by USPS.
