@wallywonder; I have a tin I ordered a year or so ago and have not opened. The SWR that I've ordered prior to that have not had that type of smell or taste. Might be a good idea to contact the seller. That can't be good.
Reminds me of the many times as a youth when we'd prank phone the local drug store and ask if they had Price Albert in a can - then once they acknowledged they did indeed have Prince Albert in a can - we'd reply ... "Better let him out or he'll suffocate and die". Harmless - but stupid fun. Well it appears Prince Albert may have survived his stint locked away in a can - but Sir Walter Raleigh actually may have dies and started decomposing in your can.
I've tried SWR many times and never had an incident like that. I agree with @opipeman - contact the seller and send it back. Something is seriously wrong.

So far it’s the only “codger” blend that I dislike, that stuff is rough…..not formaldehyde rough, but rough. Maybe be my can is messed up too🤔. I don’t know what it is supposed to taste like.
Well Nutrasweet is basically one atom away from being formaldehyde. You sure it isn't more an ammonia aroma? Would not surprise me if the tobacco was young and is still expressing ammonia, which sounds like a week-old, unchanged, litter box.
@opipeman Maybe if your cat was your drinking buddy and had a wee bit-o-the-Irish with you😬. Felix is more interested in tequila, I have to mark the bottle levels and check them. When he’s home alone, I think he has queens and molly’s over and has wild parties.

That aroma would make me give up pipe smoking. Besides, I could never get kitty litter to stay lit.
