Finally hit double digits today in Illinois. We have a few more brutal nights coming up, but after the weekend things are looking to go back to normal. It's 4 degrees outside and most likely in the garage as well, but I'm still smoking my pipe and enjoying myself.
Peoples’ Republic of New Jersey, Northern branch....... Yesterday it was 45. Today 26, with 4 to 8 inches snow forecast. ,I should have burned a bowl yesterday, but I got involved with other things.... stupid, stupid, stupid....
I often said that if you can live here in Gary, Indiana you can live anywhere.
When I worked at US Steel they had an large electronic message board at the front gate which flashed safety messages as well as the current time and temperature. I can recall going to work in the dead of winter and seeing the current weather listed at 35 below zero one day ... and on a hot summer day see the temperature of 105 posted on the message board. So with the great fluctuations we experience in the mid-west you learn to be ready for anything.
I can't begin to express just how happy I am to being retired and not having to spend an 8 or 12 hour day battling weather conditions like that. They don't quit making steel just because the weather is bad - and US Steel expected you to be on the job and ready for work what-ever the conditions were.
It's 25 in north Mississippi today. More snow and sleet, hopefully more snow than sleet this time. I hung a bird feeder full of sunflower seed out and have about 30 cardinals now. Did some sledding yesterday, my son is almost three and had the time of his life!
Today in the PRNJ, northern branch, it's currently 26 degrees with snow coming down, 2 inches per hour, six to eight inches expected.
Meanwhile, many reports coming in about Texas chickens coming home to roost. No offense, and much sympathy to our Texan members, but remember: there are three power grids in the US: East, West, and Texas. Ask why the El Paso area has electricity https://news.yahoo.com/parts-texas-not-ercot-power-080159059.html ...... it's on the Western power grid, not the Texas stands alone ERCOT (The Electric Reliability Council of Texas). How is that standing alone against Federal involvement working out?
I called my son, still in Bayonne, and asked how the Bayonne wind turbine is doing in the extreme cold, snow, and sleet. Just fine. he said.... going around and around. Similarly, the wind turbines in cold, snowy Scandinavian countries. National media reports that renewable energy accounts for only seven percent of Texas' power. It was the coal/oil resources that failed in the cold.
Further proof that if we don't work together we'll fail separately. I'm praying for the poor folk without heat in Texas. I hope you are, too.
@ghostsofpompeii I can vouch for that. I worked for US Steel 34 years... well I guess I should say I RETIRED from US Steel after they purchased the mill at Granite City...
Have three corn cob pipes, but I only like two of them. Used the other for the snow man. Sister in law laughed and said "it's literally a corn cob pipe!" It's not sticking well, but tomorrow I could build a giant one.
I am glad that our first winter in our house was milder than this year. We found out that there was no insulation in the exterior walls. We had a 3 year old and newborn. We had a couple years of nice bonuses. Once the home improvement period was completed, the bonuses became skimpy.
Tnx @PappyJoe We will take that as a ray of hope for spring up here in the north, rather than a "don't you wish you were here instead of your miserable weather patterned existence" statement...🤨😊
Musta been sent by the Russkies, so that they'd have open waters to ship things to their northern coastline's cities and places that are rarely usable for ports.

Finally, a break in the weather. 45 degrees (above zero) and the piles of snow have melted a little.

Well we all know you're not stupid, so I have to assume you simply became preoccupied...🤪
