I just acquired a very nice sterling silver band Peterson meerschaum with the rough finish. Does anyone know how to clean the outside surface of the calcinated meerschaum finish,  it is dirty in several place. Thanks

I believe you only use mineral water, but I could be wrong.

I am not sure, and follow my suggestions at your own risk.
I think I just used Everclear and a soft bristle brush on a Weber rough Tanzania meer, it did take some dirt? off, but not much.  The alcohol dries faster and does not soften the meer as much.  It's pretty tough to clean unless there is some removal of material.  Be sure to re-wax the exterior with white beeswax when finished.

For more tips I suggest putting CLEANING MEERSCHAUM PIPES into Google, and then judiciously browse for info. For example, If it says run it through the dishwasher or use muriatic acid, disregard.

I smoke meerschaum pipes exclusively and I wipe the bowl out with a dry napkin or paper towel after each smoke. The chamber does turn black, it's suppose to. The outside can be cleaned by just using some clear water on a soft towel and wiping it down. The water will absorb into the meerschaum and it will look darker, but when it dries it will be bright and shiny again. Remember that it is normal for the shank area to start turning brown after a few smokes from the tar that has been absorbed. The bowl area will also turn a cream color as you smoke it. Once you smoke a meerschaum pipe it will NEVER be the brilliant white that it was when new, but they are great smokers!
