Bakelite (polyoxybenzylmethylenglycolanhydride) pipes

Has anyone had a Bakelite pipe?  Was thermosetting phenol formaldehyde resin popular in the day? Was Bakelite safe for use as a pipe bowl without a meerschaum liner? I know that thermoplastics burn instead of melting but also smell terrible when heated.

Anything with that many letters has got to be dangerous. If you can't spell it or pronounce it ... its best to just walk away and it leave it alone.

I have seen and held a bakelite pipe in my hands. It was one a friend found at an antique shop. It was actually a very pretty, amber colored pipe and looked like it had been well used. I don't think I would smoke one though.

On the other hand, I still have finding a Bakelite baccyflap on my bucket list.
