I want to wish all of my friends on this site (that includes everyone) a Very Happy, Healthy. and Blessed New Year. May we all nurture the love we have for our Family, Friends, Neighbors and even Strangers. And I hope we all find the absolute best tobacco blend we have ever had at least once every month or so (you all know how that goes). And as one of my litterary heroes Charles Dickens said through his character Tiny Tim: "God Bless us Everyone".
Well, I could be a realist and recognize that today is just another day on the calendar. In fact, only modern humans recognize a new year. Back in the old days, it was the solstices and equinoxes that were the focus. What's in front of us for 2022? Probably more of the same shit.
Or, for a moment at least, I could live in a world where people have hope and that good things possibly lie ahead for each of us. Remember, without optimism, life has no meaning.
January 1 is a day I look forward too. I don't know if it is a southern tradition, a S.E. Missouri tradition, an Irish tradition, or a family tradition. My family has always had Black Eyed Peas and Corn Bread on the first day of each year. The story goes that it insures that you will have money all through the year. Tonight is the night.
@opipeman I have very fond memories of the times I spent in the south and since you brought it up, there was a dish called hoppin john that to this day still makes my mouth water.
The wife of a retired air Force general in the back hollers of Tennessee made it with a dinner to say thanks for the 20 cords of wood we did for them back when I had just separated from the Navy.
I’m not from the south, and have only been to Tennessee and Kentucky for amount of time (a week or so at a time), but I love hopp’in john, grits and red eye gravy, turnip greens, well, any greens, and boiled peanuts. Oh,oh, I forgot crawdads…mmm tasty. It may be sacrilegious, but I am not a fan of okra, hush puppies, chitlins, or Moon Pies, though😖
My brother, a Marine, loves MoonPies, but he always did love graham crackers….me, not so much. Marshmallow fluff does not rate very high with me either. He also ate Cap’n Crunch with Crunch Berries sogged up in a bowl of Mountain Dew….no milk. It wasn’t because we didn’t have milk either.
A question for US Marines. Is snorting oysters a common “Marine” thing to do?

Happy New Year to everyone!
Its pork, blackeyed peas, cabbage and cornbread for me. Doesn’t make any difference but it’s good food.
Moon Pies. Lord I miss Moon Pies!
