I know there has to be more than one reenactor on this site. If so, what's your unit? What events are you headed to this season, and what's your pipe of choice out in the field?
@motie2 good pictures, thanks. I have been trying to figure out what the most period correct pipes would have been for the 1860s. From what I read briar wasn't too popular in the states then? I have used clay pipes at reenactments, but the breakage rate is pretty high. Lol. I did end up picking up a BC origene pipe, as this seems like a good reproduction of a late 1850s pipe. The Albatross bone is substituted with white acrylic. input here would be appreciated. Thanks all.
@Zouave - Here's a link to an interesting article about pipes and the civil war. http://www.internationalopulence.com/civil-war-pipes/ It is written by Ben Rapaport, an avid pipe smoker, antique pipe collector, and tobacco bibliophile. He has written numerous books about pipes. I have two of them about antique pipes.
It discusses a wooden pipe which was carried in a silver plated case. It is from the Civil War. Apparently Union General Burnsides provided a testimonial for the Ridgeway Pipe that was used in advertising.
Years back, I had once considered doing CW re-enacting, as a field photographer. The idea was to use Direct Positive paper in the camera instead of glass plate negatives, thus making it quicker work to give event visitors their photos.
@AnantaAndroscoggin I would have used something like a Speed Graphic or 4x5 View Camera with a Polaroid back and the old 55P/N film if it was available.

One of his books is: Tobacco and Smoking Among the Blue and Gray. The Illustrated History of An American Folk-Art Curiosity. The Civil War Soldier's Tobacco Pipe.
Something else I found interesting was this link:
