Anyone Remember ... "Hydrostone" pipes?

For a while, there were a few places that also carried along with all the real pipes, some that were in fanciful shapes to some extent or another, made of what the manufacturers called "Hydrostone."
I succumbed to the temptation once, and got one that, if I remember correctly, was a claw-and-egg shape. I kind of treated it gingerly, as I had no idea how sturdy something with open areas in its shape might be (never having had one of such before). But alas, after a while, the entire bowl end of the stummel just -- crumbled to pieces one day.
Needless to say, I have ignored such products ever since.

It was originally developed to keep tobacco fresh on sailing ships during the early days of modern trade.
Interesting. I guess that means the stone disk in the top of some of the old glass tobacco jars is actually hydro stone.
