I've never tried but I hear of quite a few that do but they try to use corn cob pipes. I'm wondering if the different tobacco can ghost a pipe, with the string cigars I like I would imagine it quite possible.
I have never tried it, but I remember my Nonno Tarentino doing it with those Italian ropes and twists cigars. I always hoped they tasted better then they smelled. Because of the smell I never had the nerve to try them.
Definitely sounds like a job for a dedicated pipe . . . I used to like Toscani style cigars like Parodi's but that would take a pretty small bowl for the pipe to finish them off in.
I'm with @AnantaAndroscoggin The ONLY way I would attempt that would be through a dedicated pipe. However, since I'm not, nor ever have been a cigar man, my opinion isn't even worth 2 cents...
When I was 15 I worked Summers at an Italo-Centric Small resort. The Old Guys on the Bocci Court would smoke Parodi Cigars the fumes of which would sweep Mosquitos and Horseflies from the sky and ruin any desire for food. They ALL would put their stubs into vile smelling black pipes to finish them. If the wind was wrong it would knock a horse off it's legs.
