I put napkins in my ash tray and rest it in there I haven't had a car with an ashtray in years I miss them! I use a metal travel coffee cup in the cup holder.
I leave the pipes at home. I found out long ago I'm a dangerous driver while trying to smoke a pipe. I smoke a large hand rolled cigar pretty much everyday on my long commute.
I no longer have a car, but when I did I would us a pipe with a smaller bowl and tobacco just a little on the dry side so I wouldn't have to re-light it. I found with a small tightly packed bowl I also didn't have to worry about tamping while driving. This was really only a practice of mine on road trips or longer drives. It wasn't worth it for my daily commute.
Keep the windows up even if you don't have air conditioning. And if you have to, make sure not to open both the drivers side and passengers side windows otherwise you'll find yourself in a vortex of ashes.
Crack the drivers side window ONLY (about an inch or two). Once you're moving, a slight breeze will form from right to left and take most of the smoke right out the cracked window... Worked for me. Don't smoke in the car now. I bought a new one and haven't built up the nerve yet...
I don't smoke a pipe while driving but I do smoke cigars when going distance. I measure the drive in Churchills. It takes exactly one Churchill to get from Philly to Cape May, NJ. Anything more indicates a delay due to traffic or police activity. If I smoke a pipe while driving, it is usually a very short drive and less then 15-minutes in the car at the very most.
