Mason jars are cheaper than the jars with the bail type opening that @motie2 pictured above and, in my opinion, are better for long term storage.
That being said, I use those type jars for blends I smoke on a regular basis because they are easier to get in and out of than the mason jars. Be aware though, don't buy the plastic ones, they generally are not as good as the glass ones for some reason. Also, the silicon rings are better because after 5 or 6 years the red rubber seals can dry out and crack if you don't take care of them.
Short term storage: I've been using 17.5oz Bormioli Rocco jars. Yes a little pricey, but they maintain my current smoking blends and have a wide mouth for easy in and out pipe packing. Silicone gasket too. Long term storage: mason jars, dark cellar.
@motie2 The Ball lid is interesting, but with the short jars I use, the hygrometer would take lots of the space in the jar. Also, even though the meter is hot-glued? in the lid, there would still be air leaks through the meter. Unless you wanted to monitor each jar, I think they would be a bad idea for long term storage. They should work great for a single large jar that is used daily/weekly though. Cool idea. It might work just as well, actually better in my opinion, if you dropped the meter in the jar with the display facing out. Don't bother with cutting the lid and compromising the jar seal.
@RockyMountainBriar -- I tend to agree with you which is why I use this kind of jar, but with a white silicone seal instaed of rge red rubber, which decomposes over time in the air of the Peoples Republic of New Jersey.
