Air-Conditioning My Pipe On A Hot Summer Day

The weather here in the mid-west has been pretty brutal ... and I realize it's much worse on the west coast with triple digit temperatures and raging forest fires to boot. These hot summer days have put a real damper on the mid-afternoon outdoors smoke.

Well I may not be able to control the sunlight or temperature but have found a solution to cooling down the summer smoking experience with a little chemically induced air conditioning in my bowl.

I've been adding just a pinch of Sutliff Frosty Mint to what-ever aromatic blend I'm smoking and that minty menthol blast brings down the temperature in my mouth as well as nostrils during the retro-hale. The Frosty Mint on it's own can be a bit over-whelming because it is quite potent. Not in a nicotine way ... simply a real cold blast of mint ... (think a frozen York Peppermint Candy with an additional coating of Vicks-Vapo-Rub). I enjoy smoking Frosty Mint straight during in the winter months with a hot cup of cocoa - but generally tone it down (three parts Sutliff Chocolate Mousse or some other chocolate topped blend with one part Frosty Mint).

But for these summer blends I add just a miniscule pinch to what-ever I'm smoking and that seems to do the trick. Adding a bit of 'cool' without dominating or changing the flavor.

I guess it goes without saying that this blending solution only applies to aromatic smokers. I doubt anyone with a preference for straight non-aromatic blends would consider adding a pinch of minty/chocolate to their smoke. And since I'm strictly an aromatic smoker I'm not sure what negative effect it might have on an English or Var-Per. But for you aromatic smokers, you might want to give it a try. Just remember ... like the Brylcreme jingle ... "a little dab will do you".

  • @ghostsofpompeii, Thank you for that, I seen Frosty Mint many times when putting in an order, and bypassed it, seeing as I like to mix blends you've given me som incentive to try Frosty Mint while at the same time keeping in mind that it is pretty powerful.
  • interesting solution and yes as an English guy I just couldn't do it even with the aromatics I smoke.
Hey but if it works for you, go for it

We're going through one of the hottest, most humid summers we've had in years here in New England, so I appreciate any ideas to cool the smoke in my bowl.  I primarily smoke English blends so your approach isn't something I'd try.  Still, it's an interesting idea.
