Estate Pipe Motherlode... or How I Spent My Saturday

I struck the motherlode of estate pipes today. 

There is a place in Picayune, MS named Treasures & More on the frontage road that has a good supply of estate pipes on hand. I think there is over 30 pipes left and most of them are stamped Made in Denmark, Made in London or England and Made in Italy. There is one Savinelli. There was also one or two stamped Made in France. Out of all the pipes in the case only one was a Kaywoodie and one was a WDC. 

I bought a Peterson's Kapp-Royal 79 (has IRC stamped on the stem so it was probably sold by Iwan Ries) and a Soren stamped Hand Carved Made in Denmark. It is a Soren Refberg pipe. Two other pipes which stood out - a Jarl made in Denmark and a pipe with a Fleur de Lis on the stem. Most of the pipes were around $30 each and in restorable condition.

OUTSTANDING! @PappyJoe I always love to here those success stories.
I'm looking, but as of yet haven't found the "motherload" this year. I need to find 15 - 25 pipes to work on over the upcoming winter.
Meanwhile, I'm really happy for you... ( and maybe just a touch envious )...

Around hereabouts this summer, so far all I've seen was that one place had a pair of empty pipe-shaped Avon bottles.

@AnantaAndroscoggin I'm in complete agreement. My wife and I go to all the antique fair, and shops, as well as second hand store and the occasional Estate sale and the bulk of what we find are bottles, kitchenalia, old tools, and your average garage sale stuff you're trying to get rid of yourself. But seldom if ever do I find a nice collection of pipes. I'm lucky if I can even find a single one that is caked so bad that it's cracked. And it seems that when someone does have a few pipes to sell, they are well aware of the asking price after a little searching on the web or EBAY ... so bargains are hard to find. Everyone's become too damn smart.

@ghostsofpompeii I go in some shops and all they have are Dr. Grabows and Medicos that have been filled with cement and used for hammers after the dogs have used the stems for chew toys and then pissed on the pipes. Usually they are individually priced between $35 and $75 each and labeled as rare and vintage. Needless to say, I've pissed off a few shop workers by telling other people to go to the drugstore and buy the same pipe, brand new for $29.

Here's a finished photo of the Peterson Kapp-Royal I found last weekend. Took three treatments to get the funk out of the bowl and then I worked about 18 hours removing the grime and discoloration from the exterior. Found out the Kapp-Royal pipes were sold by Irwin Ries starting in 1971. I was told this one was rare because the bead work was only done on the Dunmore line back then. Original retail price was $17.50 or about $79 in today's dollars. Still worth what I paid for it.

@PappyJoe , congrats on the finds!  Lovely pipes.  It's been a long time since I've stumbled across any quality pipes in antique and resale shops. In fact, even tobacco tins and pipe stands have become scarce the past few years.

Well, it wasn't an estate sale... It was a flea market. But it is Saturday.
Came across this huge meerschaum no-name sitter. I thought I'd joke with the guy and offered him $15 for it. HE TOOK IT! I couldn't get my wallet out fast enough.
Needs a thorough cleaning, but other than that, it's in great shape. Here's some pics...

     There we go, that was easy.  I just had to touch the icon and move it.  Now it is in the correct place, where it was meant to be in the first place.  Sorry for any confusion.
     My iPhone is an old 4s....when trying to view “This Pipe Life”, the icons stack under the photos.  I must have unknowingly “fat fingered” the wrong icon earlier and did not realize it.  This iPad works much better for old eyes and fat fingers.

     Hey PappyJoe, is the stem on that Pete/IRC Kapp-Royal round or oval at the shank end?  The reason I am asking is that I have a Peterson’s “Special” that looks kind of like a Dunmore without the “beading” and a number 742 stamped on it.  I have quite a few Pete’s and have looked at thousands more,  this one has an oval stem below the “swell” to the tenon.  The shank of the stummel is still round.  It is a shape I don’t recall seeing before.  Just a question of curiosity🙂

Such a Deal, stem looked very good. The rest of the pipe looked pretty good as well and if you haven't priced meerschaum pipes lately ( pretty sure anybody on this forum probably knows) it's an even better deal

Man I have to start going to flea markets.

Here are a few pics.  I won this pipe in an EBay auction, I think from judperl, if memory serves.  It had a broken tenon and a chewed stem.  I filled the chews and made a stainless steel insert, hidden inside the tenon.  If you look closely at the first pic, you can see the end of the tube about 3/16” down inside the tenon.  Overall, I think the SS reinforcing tube is about an inch long.  The threaded aluminum end is the factory Pete “chimney”.  The “4” in “742” is stamped really lightly.  Personally I like the shank without the “beading”, and the size of the pipe very much.  After the tenon repair and the ream/clean/wax/buff, it spiffed up nicely.

@mapletop - We were up in Baton Rouge yesterday walking around the antique shops and I saw a large Paycok meerschaum but the vendor wanted $145 for it. It looked like it was one of the pre-stained pipes and but it had been heavily smoked. I know you can buy new Paycok meerschaum starting at about that price so I passed.

@mapletop the gamble is that it may be one of Paycok’s higher end premium pipes that start at $300. On the other hand I saw some real crap pipes yesterday also.

     Thanks for the info.  I thought the oval stem base was pretty unique. I had not seen any pictures of Dunmores with the stem tenon end view, so I was curious.  I have been thinking of dropping Petersonpipenotes a........note🤔

A friend saw these pipes at a sale. $12 each. Not sure what I got yet but I will keep you posted.
