It smokes great. I've smoked it at least once a day since Tuesday with Dunhill 965. The draft hole was drilled too high on this one so it won't pass a pipe cleaner but the draw is good and I haven't noticed any gurgling.
From the research I've done and from the responses I've received from Roberto Ascorti and a worker with Al Pascia, the company was started in 1980 with an "A" on the stem like on mine. The stem logo was changed in 1984. The word from Al Pascia is that it may have been carved by Giuseppe Ascorti, Roberto's father, but there is really no way of knowing.
I looked on Pipedia and at the bottom of the page there is a pipe like mine.

By the way, I like the toothpaste on a pipe cleaner idea. I’m going to start doing that to my estates too.
