A reminder for anyone in the Hartford, CT area that tonight is the monthly meeting of the Hartford Reading Society.  Our pipe club meets every second Thursday of the month from 7-10 PM.  We usually attach an activity to our usual smoking and socializing such as field trips to local sights or meeting themes.  Tonight our theme is "bow ties" (I didn't think of it...ha!) whereby we wear our...ahem, favorite bow ties.  I don't own a bow tie.  In fact, I have no plans to wear one but by all means, wear yours!  Here's a link to our Facebook page.  I hope to see you there!

  • @jim102864 Never was one for bow ties but in my Hippy days I had about a dozen multicolored ascots I'd wear with my paisley shirts.

Sounds like a lot of fun. I was once part of a Writer's Workshop and we gathered together twice a month - usually at the local library. They had private rooms where meetings could be held. Afterwards we'd all go out for coffee at a local eatery. Miss those 'group things'.

  • @ghostsofpompeii That's awesome!  I'd love to see some pictures of you donning your ascots and paisley shirts. That reminds me of the time when my then girlfriend (now wife) and I, her two college roommates and the boyfriend of one of them dressed up as hippies from the 60's for Halloween.  We nicknamed the girls, "Monday", "Tuesday" and "Wednesday".  I wore a dashiki with round framed sunglasses.  The girls dressed like go-go dancers.  Good times.  As for the HRS, it's the one group I belong to and I look forward to our get-togethers every month.  A great group of men and women to enjoy pipes and libations with and just shoot the breeze.
  • Class of '71, Springfield High, Springfield OR.

It wasn't me, but we had several real hippies in our school. As well as at Sheldon High over in Eugene where I did my Sophomore & Junior years. Two of my cousins did high school at Thurston at the other end of Springfield (the place that kid got all shooty many years later). The cousin who was more-than-less hippy himself went into the Army to get out of doing high school (of all things!!!) and then got an early out from the army to go to college (which only lasted about a month's worth of classes).
  • @AnantaAndroscoggin, Some take longer than others to find their path. I always wanted to be a cop so I went into the Army and became an MP, when I got out I took the written test and passed, I looked inside and saw that I really didn't want it. However, I had learned from my reading science fiction that Computers were the coming thing and went for it.
