So this is my first year paying attention to the Kentucky Derby. I know nothing about horse racing. Does anybody have a favorites to win in today’s races? Any traditions or particular foods/drinks(I know about the Mint Julep) you guys like to have?

  • Hoping Lone Sailor wins.
  • Man, I forgot to watch it this year.  I got too busy.  As I am writing, I have not seen the results.   I know the race is over, but I picked Magnum Moon to win, Bolt d’Oro to place, and Flame Away to show.  I am going to have to find out what horses/jockeys actually won.  I use to work for United Tote, the company that runs the paramutual wagering.  It was pretty cool, I went to the Kentucky Derby seven years in a row 1994-2000.  It was long work hours and plane rides from Montana.  I/we had special access to all of the areas for service work.  I was working behind the scenes for most of the races, but I would make a point to take a walk under the track to the infield each year and I watched the end of many of the Derby races from the building right behind the Tote Board next to the track, just before the finish line.  Front row seat, well actually standing right behind the chain link fence, with a great view of (nearly) the end of the races. I really wished they had not moved the Repair Center from Montana to Pennsylvania.  I would have had 29 years in with that company, as is worked out though, I tendered my resignation in 2000 when they uprooted the Repair Center.  I didn’t need a job bad enough to move out of Montana.  I did move from Billings to Bozeman with them in 1996, but a move to Pennsylvania was just not worth it (for me anyway).

    As as a side note.
I have one of my 125th Running of the Kentucky Derby souvenir shot glasses in the picture of my (1995) 1903 commoritive Peterson pipe in “Refurbishing Briars”.

I confess, I have not watched it this time as I got side tracked with other projects.  I usually watch with my dad.  We will be watching the Preakness in two weeks (God willing) and spend some time together.  I have not even had a chance to pick up this year's souvenir bottle of Woodford Reserve bourbon.

Woodford Reserve is a must on these occasions.
