Pipe Sets & Collections

Since the beginning of the last century and up to the 1970s, pipe sets seemed to be common purchases either as gifts or a special purchase.  While still probably around, pipe sets do not seem to be as popular or as common today. Although one can certainly assemble a set of pipes, none are readily available for purchase as a boxed set.

I have several accumulated sets but no boxed sets yet but that will probably change this year.

Indeed, although I do have a Sherlock Holmes LaStrade.  I also have the Professor, Deer Stalker, Mycroft, and Squire shapes in the less expensive “Kinsale” line.  All of them were acquired as estate pipes at much reduced prices.  I also have a Deluxe with the briar ring stem insert P in the big Sherlock Holmes XL305 Calabash, not to be confused with the older XL305 Large Bent Dublin shape.  Working on the others....PAD is rampant

Here is a store display of old WDC’s Hesson Guards from the 20’s-30’s? I am working on.  I have the 1511,1557, and 1547.  I also have a 1524 which is of the same series, but there is no number in the display for it.  Also, I suspect the Zulu in slot 1544 is the correct shape, but it does not have a shape number on it (or it has been buffed off).  I still need the 1539, 1545 and the 1544 OR conformation that the Zulu shape is correct?  These all have the threaded aluminum into threaded wood shank tenons with the Hesson Guard tube and the white triangle logo on the top of the stem.

@Corey562 I can relate.  When I was younger, I enjoyed looking at the different sets that seemed to be available around the holidays.  Pipe shops had more of a set selection and some of the shops had some really creative window displays.  Could never afford those sets when I was younger so window shopping was all I could do in those days.

@daveinlax,  The sets I posted above in this folder are sets I came across through general internet surfing and decided to save some of the photos to a folder.  I recently came across them in my computer files and thought it would be nice to share them with this group.  I have no websites to reference since I had the photos long before I was a member of this group and did not reference the locations where I saved them from.

@AnantaAndroscoggin - That's actually not a bad price for a set of Meerschaum like that but I would have to see it in person before buying. I don't particularly trust buying Meerschaum pipes on line from a place named "Bob's Photography."
