It sounds like you got the right wax. I use a buffing wheel. Hold the block of wax to a turning buffing wheel. It doesn't take much so start with a little. Then wax and buff the pipe.
@KA9FFJ I know, I know. One of our RWGN's slung that at me like a monkey throwing feces.

Here is my latest eBay acquisition. It's a no name, just simply stamped "Scandanavian". I did go fifty cents over my $20 limit, the shipping was free so I didn't mind. This is the before and after. I went with a lighter color finish and added a new acrylic stem. Just a little more tinkering with it tomorrow and it'll be ready to smoke!
@Kmhartle Great pipe! Especially for the money! @motie2 I guess you'll need to give me that article on how to buy pipes on eBay. I have NEVER been able to discover those finds... Congrats on a great find Km...
@KA9FFJ. Thanks! I'm going to fire it up this afternoon. The pictures on eBay weren't that great but I had a feeling it had a nice grain under the dark finish and grime.
When I search pipes on eBay, I use the search filters to only include pipes under $20. That eliminates a bunch of pipes to scroll through but leaves mostly junk. Many of the pipes I watch ultimately sell for well over $20 but occasionally a gem deal comes through.
One of my favorite and best smoking pipes is a Thompson I got on eBay for $8. It was never smoked!
@Kmhartle great tip. I'll start using that filter and see what happens. Again, you have a great find there... Oh, and good clean-up job on the pipe. Really looks good...
@KA9FFJ -- Finding things depends entirely on what you put in the search box at the top of the eBay pages. For example, entering the term UNSMOKED gives you this drop down of choices:
Try search terms like UNSMOKED, VINTAGE PIPE, ESTATE PIPE, or brand names, e.g., DUNHILL PIPE, CHARATAN, etc........

@motie2 You're a jewel (not a cupcake)... Thanks so much for giving those tips along with the article I requested... You're the best... Sidenote: In 6 weeks, I will have been a piper for 50 years. Started when I was 20, and haven't looked back...
I was going through the few pipes that were my dad's that I hadn't restored yet. It turns out there was an E.A. Carey Magic Inch pipe there. Knowing @motie2's high recommendation of the Carey Magic Inch, I decided to clean it up. It must have been one of my dad's favorites as it was well smoked. I reamed the bowl, disinfected the bowl and stem, sanded down the stummel, re-stained it, sanded and polished the stem, buffed and waxed it and finally ~ ordered some Papyrate filter sleeves today. As soon as they arrive, I'll give it a proper smoke. I went with a darker dye so the picture isn't great but it's a rusticated bowl with patches of smooth briar here and there. Not a bad looking pipe and I look forward to jumping on the Magic Inch bandwagon.
Nice looking pipe and a good looking restoration @Kmhartle From the pic, it looks like a panel. You need to give us a report after your "maiden voyage" ...
@KA9FFJ ~ Thanks. I'll certainly give a report after I smoke it! I'm looking forward to trying it out. I'll also try to get a better picture tomorrow in the day light. I did find the same pipe on eBay that will give you a better idea of what I started with, sans the crack. I wish I had taken a "before" picture but my phone was out of commission and I was too lazy to dig out a camera.

Just don't call me late for dinner.

I have the same $20.00 limit, and despite that, I have done well there.
And so, obviously, have you!!! Congrats!!!!
