Deep Bowl or Short Bowl

What's your preference a deep bowl for a long smoke, over an hour, or a short bowl for a short smoke, less than an hour?  I know everyone smokes differently so bowl size may vary by the user so longer or shorter smokes?

My preference being more of an occasional smoker is the longer smoke so I tend to by pipe with very deep bowls.  I have one the I can't wait to find time to break in that has a 3.5 inch deep bowl.

It depends on when I'm smoking. If I am in the yard or a after breakfast pipe I like it to be shallow. If its at the end of the night or at a club meet up I like deeper ones...Now that's a bowl @drac2485! You could smoke that all night!

I have a couple of bigger bowl pipes that I smoke when I know I won't be interrupted for a couple of hours. One of my favorite meers has lasted two hours when packed properly and still had some tobacco in the bottom. I also have some smaller pipes that I can count on lasting 45 minutes or less that I use for short smoking times.

I prefer a larger bowl. But I have to reserve my Cobbit Gandalf for when I have time for it. Most of my smoking takes about 45 minutes, but I'm a fast puffer and can't break the habit.

@joehandyman  I used to be a fast puffer too but I finally broke the habit.  *DISCLAIMER* Not saying this works for everyone but A) I quit smoking cigarettes, I now enjoy pipes and cigars that much more   I set a cadence in my head or take my pipe out after each sip on it so it sits for the time to put my hand down and back up at the least.  After I started training that cadence I noticed I slowed down a lot and got so much more flavor out of the bowl.  *the only time I huff is when I am trying to keep it lit when it's not playing nice but only temporarily. If it fights me I put it out or loosen the bowl with a pick and then tamp it back where it should be

@drac2485, I do have trouble keeping it lit when I try to slow down. I guess I need to try again to remove it after taking a puff. I tend to just leave the bit between my lips.

@drac2485 thats great advice! One of the first people I ever talked to about smoking a pipe taught me to keep a good caidence and it really helps.

I prefer a deep bowl, as I'm usually smoking a pipe while reading or writing. Nothing like having a nice long pipe while using my noggin.

It all depends on what I am smoking. Generally speaking, I don't like to smoke for more than 75-90 minutes. I have some smaller pipes I use for Virginia flakes that I can still get 45-60 minutes from.

I usually don't have the time for a really long smoke but when I do I break out the Ferndown. Depending on  what I'm smoking it's usually over 2 hours.  Very relaxing!

I have found clay pipes with small bowls to be perfect for flakes.

I am a start and stop piper and so I like a deep bowl I can shove a wad of foil into to seal er off before shoving back in my  pocket. generally aros I smoke in shallow bowls as the added air exposure helps keep em lit and the bite away.

I like a deep enough bowl for the amount of time I have ;-)

@drfrankenstein56 a wad of foil to plug the bowl...  does it scratch the pipe up?

@drac I haven't had much in the way of issues with scratches, but I also don't really pay much attention to the finish of my pipe... if im pocket packing, I dont carry pretty piece. A regular cork works well too but make sure the bowl is out! burnt cork is horrendous!

@drfrankenstein56 I hadn't really thought about it but yeah if I'm pocket carrying I'm not going to be carrying my best pipe. Thanks for the advice on the cork. I try to learn from others and repeat their mistakes and then pass it on.

Deep bowl definitely since all of my pipes have a 2inch or more bowl height.

@Pipeman83 That sounds like most of my collection.  I try and get bowls about 2 inches deep minimum but I do also pick some pipes just to put on a rack because I love the way they look.

drac2485 , I'm very picky with the size, since I don't have a lot of extra money to buy pipes, they have to be 2inches in ht. or I won't buy it. I read the description carefully and if it doesn't give the bowl ht. I won't purchase it, ebay is notorious for that, a lot of sellers won't list the measurements.
