Can anyone recommend something that isn’t grain alcohol? I am a recovering alcoholic and I don’t particularly care to have around?

I bought a bottle of pipe cleaner by a company called EA Carey. I have not used it yet though.

Instead of filling the bowl with rock salt and grain alcohol pack the bowl with moist used coffee grounds and let set overnight. Dump the grounds and rinse the pipe for 10 or 15 SECONDS. It won’t hurt the briar. Don’t do this with Meerschaum or clay.

Some people use denatured alcohol to clean their pipes but I have not tried it.

I've used the pipe cleaner/sweetener from Carey's with good results. The little bottle should last a long time. In fact, I still have the bottle kicking around somewhere. In all truth, I rarely use it. If you run a pipe cleaner through your pipe after every bowl, you'll find that it keeps it clean enough that deep cleanings are not needed very often at all.

EA Carey Professional Clean & Cure Pipe Cleaner Sweetener

    http://www.eacarey.com/ea-carey-professional-clean-cure-pipe-cleaner-sweetener.html

Developed by a pipe smoker to clean, sweeten and kill germs inside your pipe. Use generously with an absorbent pipe cleaner. Use only on the internal parts not on the external finish. Contains alcohol - keep from contacting bowl finish. Do not take internally. Keep out of reach of children. Made in the USA. 8.5 oz. bottle. (shipping weight 1 lb)

For a quick clean: Dip pipe cleaner brush in Pipe Sweeterner and pass through stem to bottom of bowl. For overworked "Sour Pipe": Remove stem from shank and quick clean stem. Remove all "cake" from bowl with reamer. Pour small amount of sweetener into bowl, let sit for a few seconds. Drain through shank, then swab shank with doubled pipe cleaner. Leave stem out and allow to dry completely for at least 24 hours.
