New/Old lighter

I found this Dunhill service lighter at a neighborhood antique store...

Aside from the paint coming off the outside it is practically new

I popped a flint in, filled it with fluid, and it lit on the first strike. Pretty cool; but not too handy to light a pipe.

The paint really started to flake with just a little use so I ended up scraping down to bare metal with my thumbnail. Not sure if I want to repaint or leave it clean.

Does anyone know what metals were used for these? It is kinda blue like stainless; but that metal seems wrong for that timeframe?

@randelli, I am unsure as to the exact metal used on the general service lighter, I do know that the lighters that were commissioned for officers by Dunhill during the war were silver. As far as I am aware the generic service lighters were composed of various metals, it very well could be some form of stainless steel.

@randelli -- It appears to be a Vintage 1940's WW II DUNHILL USA Military Trench Service Silver lighter. The sell on eBay for about $10.00 to $90.00 (for a new unused one).

@motie2 Polished it up nice and filled it with fluid today. Lit the current pipe I'm smoking with it. It's back in service for the long foreseeable future. Than you, again.
