I was wondering if anyone has checked out the new BBC show, set in the 19th century, and produced by Ridley Scott and Tom Hardy? There's quite a bit of clay pipe smoking by Tom Hardy, as well as a few of the other actors. I picked up a copy of season 1 at Walmart, and finished all 8 hour long episodes in 2 days. I would highly recommend this series, and I am anxious to get a copy of season 2 as soon as it hits the shelves.

I figured I would give you guys a heads up, since most of us perk up when an actor fires up a pipe on screen. It's nice when the writers and producers match the pipe, with the correct period in history.

There is also quite a bit of pipe smoking in another new show on the TNT network. It's a limited run program called The Alienist.

Taboo hasn't made it down here yet. How ever I do watch many BBC shows on the local PBS station, for instance Father Brown,Granchester Masterpiece,Midsummer Murders,Pie In The Sky,Foyles War,just to name a few. I find them vastly superior to most of the American dramas.

@buflosab One of the fun things about the British shows is you see an actor in one show in a role as a Stuffed Shirt Aristocrat and a Cockney Gutter  Rat in another; and a major role in one show and a minor part in another. They Know their Craft.

That's the truth. Brit actors and actresses sure make the rounds. Yes they do know their Craft. My only complaint is that sometimes their accents are so heavy it's hard to make out what they are saying.

What the storyline about for Taboo?

@Londy3, it's about a guy who travels to Africa, and then comes back to London where he inherits his fathers estate. His father purchased an island, and the East India Company wants the island for trading purposes, but he won't sell. They want to play rough, but he is belligerent and has a high pain threshold. In between beatings and murders, there are breaks for much needed pipe smoking, for relaxation purposes.

@buflosab I too love BBC Masterpiece programming. I always use closed caption when viewing. I can usually understand them, but now and then the closed caption helps.
Going to have to check out Taboo. Thanks got the tip @xDuthx ...

@xDutchx, Taboo is an incredible show! Along the same vein is Peaky Blinders, by far and away my favorite show, it is about a gang in post WWI Buckingham, England.

@motie2 - I like NCIS and NCIS: New Orleans. Tried getting into NCIS: Los Angeles but I just can't get interested in it. I was a WCW fan until they started imported the heels from the WWE.

@Woodsman, Joe and I are both fans of 19th century based fiction, as well as non fiction. I figured that it would appeal to a lot of the members here. I suppose that era is unique, in that it was the last before technology took off and never looked back.
