Can it be fixed

has anyone been able to fix a shank after it's been broke or is the pipe trashed now

  • This is one where I would suggest you find a good pipe repairman. Depending on what the break is, they may be able to repair it by banding.
  • Duct tape can fix anything  :p
  • Duct tape and channel locks. Channel locks can even serve double duty as a hammer.

Seriously, I would agree with Jud, the best bet is to have a pipe restoration guy have a look at it, if you think spending the money on the repair is worth the investment.

  • If it is close to the stem you can fix it as it gets closer to the bowl end it gets a little more tricky.
  • @Russell @Corey562 is right. It depends on the position of the break (close to stem vs. close to bowl), perpendicular break vs. parallel, a hairline crack (where and how long). Easiest and probably the best, especially if you don't have the equipment, is to follow @judandhispipe and @xDutchx advice and find a repair restoration guy. And if you really don't care what the neighbors think, follow @Londy3 advice... :)
  • The last repair I had made was about a year ago, on a little Cayuga lonsdale. I had been moping about it, not having gotten off my duff to get it fixed, when I got the bright idea of driving up to Paul's Pipe Shop in Flint where I bought the darned thing in the first place. (Besides, I can always find something to buy at Paul's.) Since I'm retired, I merely hopped in my car and drove the hour up to Flint. They put a nice band on it for me in about 15 minutes, and it's as good as new.
