The general who established Arlington as a national cemetery where it is, did so because he wanted to prevent Robert E. Lee from ever being able to move back into his family's home, Arlington. He succeeded.
I used to know someone who spent a tour of duty as a Marine attached to the guard there during the Reagan years.
Had a chance to spend all day ANC in 2013, what a incredible place all the years I spent hearing about ANC,here I was standing right in the middle of this beautiful cemetery. For those interested a book by Robert M. Poole called On Hallowed Ground-The story of Arlington National Cemetery, gives a wonderful story on how ANC came to be. Bye the way today is national wreath laying day at ANC and many more ceremony's around the country.
