London's story, "To Build a Fire" contains two mentions: 1) When the man had finished, he filled his pipe and took his comfortable time over a smoke. 2) He could see him quite clearly, warm and comfortable, and smoking a pipe.
@motie2 To Build a Fire is a short story written by Jack London so I don't consider it to be an autobiographical short story. There are actually two different versions of the story. The first was published in 1902 and the second in 1908. In the 1902 version, the character was named "Tom Vincent" and there were no dogs. The 1908 version had the dogs and had worse weather from what I remember.

I haven't found any photos of Jack London smoking a pipe, but that advertisement sure looks like him.
