I've Given Up Looking For Fruit Flavored Tobacco Blends

Okay, now it's official - I've given up looking for a any fruit flavored blends because replicating a blend that can pass as genuine fruit seems to be an impossibility. Whether I'm getting apple, peach, blackberry, or cherry they all end up with a distinct artificial chemical taste. And leave the same aftertaste in my mouth as artificial sweeteners. At best a cherry blend might taste like a sugarless cough drop. Strangely the only fruit flavored aromatic I find satisfying is Captain Black Grape. And Panama Jack's "Key Lime".

I guess tobacco cased in vanilla, chocolate, maple, caramel, and honey use the actual products they're named after, where as replicating fruit flavor is a chemical process devoid of any actual fruit juices. Possibly adding actual juice from fruits and berries would eventually cause the tobacco to mold in much the same way as adding an apple peel or orange peel to your tobacco pouch.

I had a great deal of success using Watkins Orange Concentrate when making my "Dreamsickle" blend, it actually taste like oranges. But that's because the only ingredients are 78% alcohol and orange oil. No other chemicals are added. Maybe certain citrus fruits produce oils which lend themselves to flavoring tobacco blends, while apples cherries and berries ferment and only produce a juice.

Well I don't understand the chemistry of creating aromatic tobacco blends but do know I haven't found a fruit blend that doesn't taste nasty.

  • First, "flavored" things are scary for me. That only means they did something to something that is an attempt to taste like something else (LoL). I get a little nervous when there are too many ingredients in things to make them taste like what the label states. If you have to tinker with something that much it's a red flag for me. This goes with anything we buy. I'm all about the short ingredient list. The less processing the better.

    Ok. Well that's settled now.
  • @Londy3 I don't know how you did it, but somehow that all made sense to me ( although my head is still spinning from the "something" sentence)
  • As for apple drew estates makes a blend called harvest of hudson that is really great or atleast I think so.
  • Bremen Pipe Smoker at YTPC just evaluated several Christmas blends, and he said the same thing about those that were trying to taste "fruity".  The blends were chemical-tasting and he was disappointed with this year's blends. He did mention John Aylesbury's 40th anniversary blend and said that, although it was expensive, he kept buying it again and again because the flavour was fruity without being chemical.  He called it "something special".  Might be worth a look, but I can't find it in stock in the US.  Of course, he is in Germany.
  • @KA9FFJ, glad something I said made some sorta sense to something posted. Yet, sometimes it's something we say out of something we experienced that impacts what someone else said to begin with. Now, with that said, I really like something that is less and not more or in other words, something less tampered with. Again, BeAnalog is a reduce and simplify kinda lifestyle
  • I've had limited luck with McCormick (sp?) extracts: vanilla, lemon, and orange, especially the vanilla and the lemon.

Took me four tries to post this. My 'puter is screwed. Just ordered a new one.....
  • @motie2 Yeah...... Exactly!... Or something...
