I have a couple of tins of C&D's Carolina Red Flake. I think Ill hold onto them even with the recall. Those that were lucky enough to get mold free tins said the tobacco was amazing. I figure If I hold onto them they will be super limited editions, mold or not.
Stephen Brooks has a blend that is made entirely of components that are each over 45 years old and it's $58 an ounce. I got a bowl of it and it was good and VERY delicate. I was so excited to try it I forgot to eat...the perique is the youngest ingredients at 45 years old...and dang...I really got a little tipsy.
@PipeProfessor I just got some of that Peterson Summertime 2016 and I'm excited to try it. I however am going to let it set on the shelf in the tin for a while.
@thesubcon, It will probably be better with some age, however mine was very dry right out of the tin, so you may want to check and make sure the bag inside is sealed well.
@PipeProfessor holy crap man....I just remembered and looked and it totally was open!!! I should have thought that when I could smell it in the tin. I just pulled it out and dropped it into a jar. You are right, it was really dry...trying a bowl right now!
@thesubcon Yeah, mine was open as well. It really surprised me as there is like NO seal what-so-ever. I have a tin of their Holiday Season that I need to check. I don't want it sitting for a few months and turning to dust.
Early on when OTC blends were readily available at my local drug store I smoked a lot of Borkum Riff. I've since tried it and feel the recipe has changed drastically for the worse. It has become my least favorite OTC blend. But they did office a limited edition blend that isn't too bad - and although it's not in my regular rotation I do smoke it now and again. And usually each time I smoke it I ask myself why I don't smoke it more often. The blend is 36 Degrees North Mixture, flavored with California Wine. It has a very nice tin and room note, flavorful with a hint of wine but not over the top, and one of the few Borkum Riff blends that don't give me tongue burn. It's not something I'd get on the highest mountain top and shout to the masses to try ... but it's not bad. And if you come upon a 3.5oz. can it's a nice occasional blend.
