Ebay is the obvious place to find a huge selection of estate pipes. I’ve bought several there myself. However, I’d love to hear of other places you find good estate pipes.
@ jfreedy Smokingpipes.com, already cleaned. I have also found some at antique shops and a swap meet at, of all places, the Boys and Girls Club on a special antique swap meet weekend. The antique shops I checked all had junkers, not worth my time. I did find a couple at the swap meet. One had a double bore hole and a tube in the stem, the second, lower hole was where a folded pipe cleaner was inserted to soak up moisture. When done, toss the cleaner and install a new one, simple. I wonder why it never caught on?
I've been doing business with Steve Fallon for years. He doesn't restore his pipes, but in todays climate, that can definitely be a positive thing. Some ebay sellers, will take a pipe with a burnout, and fill it with wood putty, then add a charcoal coating to cover up the patch. Steve doesn't do this type of thing, and will sell you a quality estate, in great condition, that has excellent potential for restoration. He also lists pipes in unsmoked condition that need nothing but breaking in. Also, check out his vintage tin offerings. On a regular basis, he lists for sale rare and hard to find tins, at very fair price points.
@xDutchx & @motie2 -- How funny. I sat next to Pipe Stud at the Texas Pipe Show slow smoke competition. Thanks for the website. I'll check out his stuff.
Shae over at Vintage pipes has been one of my go to's for a few years now. He restores and sells pipes and accessories and has top notch customer service. Highly recommended, check him out here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/VintagePipes
<quote>Great stuff!!! I was particularly taken by this cob, but at $42.00 it's out of my "afraid of SWMBO" price range, anyways.>
@motie2, I was told years ago, by an experienced pipe collector, that the current exchange rate, equals 3 pairs of shoes for any addition to the collection. Payless shoes won't cut the mustard, they need to be quality shoes that will meet the standards of SWMBO, as well as all her friends and family. If you want that cob, you simply need to step up to the plate and bat!
Yes, but SWMBO will be holding the bat and swinging for the bleachers, with my head as the ball.
Seriously, though, I understand the shoes metaphor. I learned a long time ago that better shoes -- whether casual, sport, or dress -- are a better value, lasting often three times as long. In the long run, dear drives out cheap, unless you are connected..... or have a trick. My trick is I only buy Carey's, have a twenty dollar limit, and make use of eBay. Fortunately for me, it appears most folks are not interested in Carey's. So, mum's the word.....
@motie2 Wally Frank's Pipe of the Month (POM) was a thing where you paid them $12.00 and they sent you a pipe a month Postage Paid. I started collecting them when they were $5 or so. Suddenly someone thought Pipe of the Month was Pipe of the Year and drove the prices on Ebay to ridiculous levels.
@motie2, I agree that quality shoes and boots are definitely worth the money in the long run. They will also keep you out of the podiatrist's office. I have also found that a $50 boot/shoe dryer is definitely worth the investment, for making expensive footwear last longer.
So let's see. Three quality pair of womens shoes, at $150 a pair, plus $42, would have you the proud owner of that cob, for a total of $492. Not including tax of course!
SWMBO doesn't buy "quality shoes," shops with me at Kohl's and Target, spends mostly on pastels and art supplies, and doesn't wear make-up or have her hair done. A 68 year old former hippy chick...
@xDutchx I agree, Steve Fallon has some great stuff. I also regularly check his vintage tines (page 4) and have found some great OCT deals that are no longer available and the tobacco is just as great if not better The I remembered.
@Charles, Steve is the type of seller that lists on ebay, for the love of the pipe and his fellow brethren. The type of seller that will always treat us right, because he truly loves the community. I feel that we are extremely lucky to have him as a source of fine pipes, and aged tobacco. No matter where you live, you aren't far from Waco, TX.

@motie2, Thanks for posting up a pic of SWMBO! It is nice to have a picture in our minds, of your significant other, who lovingly rules the roost! :^)

motie2 I have found some real gems on Etsy. Don't forget about searching for tobaccos either, a couple years ago I found an old sealed tin of Nightcap for a steal.
I learned navigation back before there was GPS by hunting with my father before all the lumber companies closed their properties and started selling hunting leases. As long as you know which way is north, you pay attention to your surroundings and occasionally mark your trail, you shouldn't get lost. Daddy only made it through the second grade back during the Depression but became a towboat Captain/Pilot, he also taught me how to read maps and charts.
