A Twist on Pipe Smoking Competitions
Today we have pipe smoking competitions that focus on smoking a given quantity of tobacco for the longest period of time. That is a great way to enjoy tobacco. But I've just been made aware that, in Victorian England, there were smoking competitions for women, where they sought to smoke the greatest quantity of tobacco in an hour's time. The winner received a gallon of gin (!) as the prize. This competition was held during the "Scouring Festival", where the town folk in Oxfordshire would pound the chalk on the hillside to maintain the pristine condition of the Uffington Horse.
