I have a general question for anyone that has done this before: can I flush a bisque fired clay pipe with hot water? Seems to me that since it's been fired, I can, but I want to hear it from someone that has or know that it can be done.
@vtgrad2003 Sorry brother, I've never had any experience with clay pipes. Interesting question though. I know @Pappyjoe has clay pipes. He might be able to help answer your question...
Another STL Pipe Show shoe box pipe. I found a stem that fit it perfectly. Don't know if it was the original or not, but it looks good to me. Good looking pipe...
Had to take a razor blade and level some raised areas, then spent about 20 minutes mixing until I finally found a match that satisfied me... I'll let it set up all day before putting on the detailing that hopefully will help it to blend in even better...
@vtgrad2003 if a bisque pipe is what I think it is, then it’s just a clay pipe that hasn’t been glazed. I have a lot of cheap German clay pipes and I have rinsed one occasionally after they have cooled down. As far as I can tell, none of mine have been damaged.
@PappyJoe Yep, that’s what it is; it’s one of those Old Dominion pipes. I figured it would be okay but I just wanted to check with someone that has done it before. Thanks for the info 👍
@vtgrad2003 Just don’t put it in a container of water and let it sit for a long time. LOL.
Then again, we went to the Vicksburg Battlefield a couple of years ago and.visited the museum. That had the bowls from clay pipes recovered from an ironclad that was sunk in the river. Being underwater didn’t seem to damage them.
My situation is a little different; I'm not smoking tobacco out of the pipe but what's called Delta 8. It's a very mild marijuana derivative (perfectly legal in most states in the US, including NC) and when mixed with CBG hemp (no THC), helps me relax at the end of the day. I have terrible chronic back issues and since I've been smoking this particular mixture, I'm not as restless as I used to be (because of all the back spasms) and I'm finally getting a good night's sleep as well. It's a hell of a lot better than something like Ibuprofen and a lot healthier too as it doesn't metabolize through the liver.
Anyway, Delta 8, when heated, is somewhat gooey and doesn't form the hard resin that tobacco does, so trying to 'burn it off' in the oven would likely just catch the pipe on fire, lol...and maybe even my oven. So flushing is probably the ultimate solution. Metal and glass pipes normally used for regular marijuana weren't working for various reasons (mostly because they didn't hold enough) so I've always used the cheap hardwoods that you get from Missouri Meerschaum. But with this resin and because they are hard to keep clean, they get rancid and thrown away so I thought I'd try a clay pipe for a change and see if it's a more permanent solution.
@vtgrad2003 I don't think you can put the clay pipes in the oven and get the same results. Mostly I've seen it done by putting the clay pipes in a wood fire or charcoal fire (before using to bbq or grill). Both of those get hotter than an electric or gas oven.
I've read the same thing. Most that recommend the oven technique say to put it in the oven on the self-clean option which normally goes up to about 500 Celsius, so that would probably do the trick at those temperatures if you had normal caking like from tobacco. It shouldn't cause any harm to the pipe as bisque is normally fired at about 1000 Celsius.
@mapletop HaHa…It means I am not ok with weed, CBD, Delta8 (which I have never heard of), Hemp, whatever the hell you want to call it. Again, just me, do whatever you want that makes you happy, and does not unduly affect others negatively.
Well, I've never had a St. Patrick's pipe... until NOW! Had this old Whitehall estate pipe for quite a while now. I've been avoiding it and I'll show you why... First, here's the pipe:
Taking the splitting band into consideration, I figured this might be a remedy to the problem... so I tried one and, low and behold, it fit! (I'd rather be lucky than good any day). So I starting cleaning the pipe up... Then came the stain...

Good job!
I don't know how you manage it, but you continue to amaze me!
Problem: I found the stem I thought would look good, but ah, it wasn't even close to fitting...

I read somewhere that you can just toss clays in a fire and burn them clean…not sure if it’s true or not though.

The 3rd pic down showed my real dilemma... 3 small splits in the band...
