I decided to go with a Dunhill style innertube to bring the airway in this pipe back to “normal” specs = 4mm airway. The three extra “Grand Slams” I made were too small. I will try this innertube and see how it goes. I generally like a 3.5mm or even a slightly smaller 7/64” ~ (2.8mm) airway so I might decide to go down another size. Personally, I like Dunhill style innertubes, they keep the shank clean. After all, I understand they were intended for that very purpose before the advent of pipe cleaners. I’m not sure if that is an “old wives’ tale” or not, but they work for me.
Well, some times you just fall into it (for good or bad). This time, for good. A golf friend found a small box while searching for an item of his he'd misplaced. He realized it contained some pipe smoking items and, since it never caught on with him, they had been stuck away in that box for over 10 years! He gave me the box and told me he hoped they were things I would enjoy. Here's the list: 3 Tinder Box tobaccos: 1. 1oz Crown Royale 2. 1oz Honey Cavendish 3. 2oz Captain Spice Then the following: A Czech took A Comoy all leather and suede wrap-style pouch And last but not least, a GBD Oxford pipe! The pipe is the reason I'm posting here because, though it is in pretty good shape, the rim has charring and the stem needs some attention. So I will be doing a little work to bring the pipe back to original...
I have a 1927 Dunhill innertube Lovat that has a replacement innertube that I made. I also have two original Dunhill innertubes with the original packaging and the little “slip/keeper?” rings. Sadly they are not the correct size for any of my pipes. My new Dunhill did not come with an innertube (I was disappointed). I am not sure if it was by design or not. I have seen that some? new Dunhill’s have an innertube included. I made innertubes for my new Dunhill and also the estate Ruby Bark. The two older ones smoke well. I have yet to break in the new one. I also made an innertube for the pipe that I made for myself. It smokes well, and the shank is still beautifully clean. I don’t consider the innertubes as “stingers”. Most “stingers” suck, the only ones that work well for me are the old Yello-Bole “long scoop?” type. The rest are just gurgle machines. I also use the Peterson System pipes with the “chimney” in place. They are not “stingers”, they are one of the integral parts of the Peterson System. Like them or not, they work for me.
I was gifted this GBD Oxford by a golfing buddy. Not in too bad shape. Some chatter on both sides of the stem with minimal oxidation. The bowl will need a little TLC, but the most attention will be the removal of the charring on the rim. I'll keep you updated on my progress...
Tnx @Zouave. Been busy with grandkids and plan on starting bringing it back to "new" status Thursday. I"ll submit some pics along the way as I progress...
Started working on a gifted GBD. Using the old fashioned distilled water and soft rag, I've slowly worked out most of the rim problem. I"ll use micro pads and try to hopefully eliminate all signs of charring. Then I'll attempt to "freshen up " the rest of the bowl before addressing the stem...
@jfreedy Probably find out how it smokes tomorrow, unless I decide to gift it to one of the brothers here at TPL... I agree @kellyg53 I have 3 GBDs and they're all good smokers...
My next project, a Peterson Deluxe #264....I remembered to take before pictures this time🙂 The stem is sttuuucck in the shank, and there is a hairline crack started (I got it this way). I hope the freezer trick works, it’s going to be dicey. I guess the previous owner/owners did not know the freezer trick........or they did and it didn’t work😳. If you look close, you can see the hairline crack in the first picture. It is dead center of the shank where the stem is inserted and it’s about 1/4” long.....so far. We’ll see how it goes.
Wiped down (on the outside only) with some NAPA Professional Auto Detailing Glass Cleaner. Bowl reamed and wiped out with Everclear. Next is the internals of the shank and stem, the fun part...NOT!
Hmm, forgot to post this one I guess. I actually got the stem out before I started cleaning it. The freezer tricked worked. Gotta love the freezer trick🙂

That GDB turned out very nice. Nice cross-cut briar with flanks of bird’s-eye, cut pretty much perfectly centered on the block👌🏻

You did a great clean up job on that pipe. Enjoy it now!
