Cleaning a pipe after sickness

I recently got diagnosed with strep, and had been smoking my pipe right up until getting sick. I know you're supposed to throw out your toothbrush and thoroughly wash anything you put in your mouth (like a retainer, invisalign, etc.) after taking antibiotics for four days. I'm going to wash my pip step really well, but do I need to wash my barrel as well? And if so, how should I go about doing that, so that I don't get sick again?

Strong alcohol always does the job. Use some on a pipecleaner, too.
