@motie2 - a couple of years ago, I was searching the internet for information on churchwardens and found a historical document in German about churchwardens. Unfortunately, I lost the document I downloaded and haven't been able to find it again, but it differs from the information on pipedia. It claims the "churchwarden" pipe were first seen in Germany or Austria and the style migrated to England.
Either could be correct.
I've also came across an article that said the breaking of the stems of clay tavern pipes for the next customer was a myth.
I can hardly wait @mfresa l love hobbit, cobbit, dwarf, wizard, LOTR pipes. I don't own one, but always catch myself giving extra long look-sees when I see one. I wait with anticipation...
@mfresa I think my next purchase will be in the cobbit line. They're cheap yet have had many good reviews here at TPL, especially the elf. I think I'll check MM and see if they have a sale on one and make it my Christmas present... If not there, I'll try PC...
Really love the Cobbit Dwarf much more than any other Cob. That clay pipe stem didn't make much sense to me as there was no knowledge of Germ Theory at that time.
The only pipe I ever had catch fire on me was a cheap mini made in China corn cob pipe. And even then I was trapped in an elevator for several hours smoking non-stop before it starting burning.
@KA9FFJ, it is the motif from the entryway of the Woodland Elf kingdom. there are pillars in the entryway, and this pattern is on the top and bottom of the pillars. By the way, if Peter Jackson is looking for someone for the next film, I'm his guy.
@mfresa I love it. Have you fired it up yet? Curious to hear the results. Only one thing beats a good-looking pipe... A good-looking pipe that's a good smoker...

the motif is taken from the scene where the Dwarves enter the kingdom of the Woodland Elves.
