Burnout? Not pipe related either....or can it be?

So who gets burned out on things? Bored, need a change, tired of same routine?

Sometimes I get bored with playing same games, smoking same Cigars, Smoking with a certain Pipe or Smoking the same Pipe Tobacco, Going to same sights day after day, talking to same people, hanging out with same people and watching the same thing over and over.  Who else is like this? Do you take short or long breaks and go back to it later? Do you change what you do all together and never go back to what you were bored with? How do you handle Burn Out?!

  • I'm waiting to get tired of smoking Barbados Plantation. It's going on three weeks now, and I have smoked nothing else.
  • @Wolf41305 When certain reality TV shows first aired, like Survivor, Big Brother. The Amazing Race, and Bar Rescue I was a regular viewer. Then after a few years the shows seemed to be nothing but bickering and I burned-out on them. As a matter of fact I pretty much avoid all reality shows now. Went through a phase where I was watching people renovate houses and flip them for a profit, but that got old as well. Once upon a time I was a regular viewer of MSNBC then during the elections I got burned-out on both them and CNN because of the negativity and general smugness of the commentators and started watching FOX (which was more conservative leaning) ... and about now I'm pretty well burned-out with all the TV new channels. Watching the cable news is as bad as watching Big Brother and Survivor - there is nothing but constant bickering and I can do without it. "F**k em all!  Like I stated once before I'm 67 and never voted in a single election because all politicians are crooks. But I imagine if I had to be labeled something it would have been an Independent. But now I'm neither Republican, Democrat, Independent, Liberal, Conservative or what-ever Bernie Sanders was ... I'm a burnt-out American who is fed up with the lot of them and just wants to be left alone. A pox on all their houses. So yea, I guess it's safe to say I'm burned-out on something. Politics! And unfortunately changing the channel won't help that problem.
  • All the time. Which is why I keep searching for new stuff to do

  • All I can say is, the more I'm around people, the more I like dogs.

Does that explain how I feel?
  • @ghostsofpompeii, I tire of news people putting their agendas ahead of truth. In my search for a News Reader that just passes it along I came across BBC World News. They just read it out loud and no Snarky.

I long for the days when the news came on at 10:00 PM every night and then the 'Late Night Movie', or if it was the week-end 'Shock Theater' or 'Creature Features' began at 10:15 P.M. Think of it ... news, weather, and sports all wrapped up in fifteen minutes. The newscaster didn't have time to toss in his or her opinion ... just read the news. As Jack Webb would say on "Dragnet" ... "Just the facts, Mam." That's the way I want to hear the news. No opinions, commentaries, or agendas ... just the facts. And 'researched' facts at that ... and none of these rumors masquerading as so-called facts from 'unnamed sources'. Honest to God fact-driven news in 15 minutes or less would make my nightly television viewing much more pleasurable. I could be informed of current events, know what the weather will be like tomorrow, and get the scores from my favorite teams ... and then it's movie time.

I think those of us who grew up watching broadcast TV in the 50's and 60's have seen the best that will ever be offered in that medium and today's "news" and politics are not worthy of my time and attention.
When boredom rears its head there are three things that help: Netflix, Pandora radio, and the internet..
If video entertainment is what I want I can always find something on Netflix. Either and old classic or something brand new. When I just want to smoke and drift through the day Pandora is a big help. I seed it with an old tune from memory and just sit back and hum along. And last the Internet is where I look for news topics that interest me. Often I turn to YouTube, I particularly like the wood turning videos.
If all else fails three is always TPL where I can come and browse through.
  • When news became infotainment, designed to turn a profit, traditional TV journalism went to hell.

It hasn't yet come back. Trouble is that the real news makes me want to throw things at the TV.
  • Well, I don't think the internet is a reliable source of truth. Look at the poor fool the read about Hillary's Underage Sex Ring run out of a Pizza Parlor in the DC burbs. He went there armed to the teeth to free the abused children. The Web has too many bad people of all stripes that can say whatever they want.
  • It's not the internet that distorts the news, it's the sites and their slants.
One must be -- literally -- discriminating in whose reporting one accepts as "truth."
To say that the internet is not a reliable source of truth, is to say it's not worth the effort to separate the wheat from the chaff.
But, yes, there's a whole lot of bloviation going on..... and there's a whole lot of purposefully nasty stuff being put out there.

But,  "the truth is out there."  ~Xfiles, Charmed, NCIS
  • So far, I'm fortunate enough that I haven't grown bored with any of my blends or pipes. I tend to smoke a variety of blends and switch them around each night. As for getting bored with specific pipes, I don't look at it that way. For me, it's spending some time with a loyal companion.

Where I can see pipe burnout is when I'm looking for a new pipe. I go through phases where I focus on certain shapes. It started off with Dublins, but now it's looking for the Canadian family of pipes, Lovats, and Bulldogs.

@ghostsofpompeii Funnily enough, The Amazing Race and Survivor are still tv shows I enjoy watching with my wife. I don't watch sports, but they're kind of like my version of a sport. Sure, the bickering can get annoying, but I love seeing all the locations and tasks on TAR, and the layered strategy in Survivor. Reality TV is a dirty word, and has been for some time, but I prefer it over most TV I see today.
  • My favorite reality tv shows are Face Off on Syfy (competitors doing special effect makeup) and Ink Master on Spike (competition to find the "best" tattoo artist). There is no drama between the contestants on Face Off and the drama between those on Ink Masters is what you would expect to see in a biker bar without the fighting.
  • I enjoy reality tv, but there's something that bothers me with it. I don't like how reality tv has taken over channels like the History Channel, replacing their history programing with shows that have nothing to do with history. I don't have a problem with the shows themselves, but I wish they were on a different channel.
  • <quote All I can say is, the more I'm around people, the more I like dogs. quote>

My grandfather used to say this all the time, and I can't help believe there is something to it!
  • It's not "news" anymore and has not been for a long time. These are talking heads spewing out unsolicited opinions. This is not freedom of the press, it's freedom of opinions. The news clerks should be held to a higher standard since they have a microphone if this is really freedom of the press.
  • @xDutchx I'm often reminded of the quote from Captain Nemo in the movie "Mysterious Island" ... "Contact with my species has always disappointed me." The more I watch cable news the more I begin to understand Nemo's mindset.
  • @PappyJoe; There are Regional Tattoo Artists and their works conventions in many places like AmJam in Schenectady,NY which I believe is in January, I was staying at the Sheraton(I think) there working on a System problem at the time. The Hot Tub was simply astounding.
  • The talking heads or news clerks, on the networks, have not broadcasted the real news in many years, decades. It's only getting worse as we have more outlets for information access. This is about capturing and retaining their audience base that now have many choices. They want to cut through all the noise to get attention and captivate people's minds with outrageous stories. Think back what Hitler did to win the people over. His premise was if your going to lie make it the biggest lie so hard to believe it must be true.
  • @londy3 - in the 70s we used to call it "Blood & Guts Journalism". Media stopped reporting the news and started pandering to the masses who has always had a fascination with tragedy. At the turn of the 20th century it was called yellow journalism. These days it's called partisan journalism as the mainstream media never passes the opportunity to lead with or spin a story that is negative to the current president.

By the way, a lot of people have referred to Walter Cronkite as the "most trusted man in America" when he was on the air. Cronkite was the best news anchor CBS ever had. Cronkite was also a socialist.

Don't trust any media outlets, they're all tanted badly. Get your information from the horses mouth. Think how the NK people must be thinking how and why the US is provoking their dictator Kim  (the little big man). They have no way on knowing the truth. It's twisted.
  • I have a few hobbies that over the years I have gotten burned out on, but they are still in the back of my mind as things that I might one day return to.  One being - Geocaching.
  • I left stamp collecting behind when I turned teenage.
  • @motie2 Thank God that hasn't happened to me yet although I did have one of those miniature corn cob pipes literally catch fire after extended use.
  • @motie2 The site needs a "Sad" button for pictures like that.
  • I always wondered about the people who packed the same lunch everyday, for years. I could never do that.

I'm one of those, sorta. I have one dish I always order, unique to the restaurant I'm in. For example, in St. James Gate Pub, I always have Shepherd's Pie and a Guinness. At Porto Bello I always have Balsamic Chicken. In a diner, I always have "Bagel All The Way." And, of course, this pipe life anyway, I always smoke Barbados Plantation. OK, except for an occasional Mrs. Hudson's.....
  • :)@Wolf41035 Just start with a blend you've never tried before (something that starts with the letter A) and, as you can afford it, little by little work your way through the alphabet...
  • @motie2 Wow! I've had 1 pipe burn on me just about 1/8" into the bowl wall not through it.. I scraped the char out and slowly built up the hole with thin layers of pipe mud followed by smoking until it was built up even with the rest of the bowl.
