Anything that might dissolve the rim buildup might also affect the finish. I've carefully applied 91% isopropyl alcohol with a cue-tip to good effect.....
Saliva on a Q-Tip is good. The best way to keep the rim clean though, is to only load your bowl 2/3rd's, and then you won't need to worry with rim cleaning at all.
Spit rubbed around the rim before lighting prevents rim burn. A Mr. Clean Magic Eraser dampened and rubbed on the discoloration removes it quickly. Don't press too hard.
I ruined the finish on my Big Ben Fantastia by rubbing too hard with the spit method and removing that special marbleized finish around the rim. Now some of the black primer is exposed.
Country Squire Radio addresses this question is one of their episodes. I can't remember which one, but it is in their archives. Jon David Cole talked placing a warm damp cloth on top of the bowl and applying pressure while slowly twisting.
@ghostsofpompeii, In some cases, highly acidic foods such as red meat, fish, eggs, etc. can produce a super solvent, that can take the lacker right off the rim, let alone a high quality carnauba. For centuries, pineapple and pineapple juice have been used to promote more user friendly natural secretions.
