As they say, "more is better", so I might try squeezing two filters together and jamming them in and see if it works for twice as long before it starts tasting bad.
@HarryMamassian After refurbishing and cleaning hundreds of “estate” pipes, I will disagree with your statement “keeps the pipe cleaner”. The filter holds lots of moisture that just sits in the shank soaking it deeper into the wood, and meerschaum anyway. It’s especially bad if the filter is left in the pipe for even a short time after the tobacco is done and gone. The grossest pipes I have ever cleaned were pipes that had stuck, soggy, tar filled, nasty filters tore off in the shank and/or stem.
When on a week or so vacation, I'll usually take 2 9mm pipes with 6 filters along with 6 pipe cleaners, pipe tool and a bic lighter (you can board an airplane with a bic) all in my tobacco pouch. That way, after a bowl, I just immediately dump the filter, run a cleaner through the stem and shank, wipe the bowl out with a paper towel and, after a days rest while smoking the other pipe, it's ready to go a second round. Perfect? Nope, but when you're traveling, a days rest and a fresh filter is better than nothing. While at or around home, I never use a filter...

The only ones I actually use a filter in are my cobs.

Otherwise known as a short piece of pipe cleaner formed into a ring😉
