Today the U.S. Coast Guard celebrates its 227th Birthday. It was founded as "a system of cutters" in 1790 and has also been known as the Revenue Marine Service and Revenue Cutter Service. In 1915, the Lifesaving Service was merged with the Revenue Cutter Service and the name was changed to U.S. Coast Guard. In following years the Lighthouse Service and Bureau of Marine Investigations and Navigations were added to the Coast Guard.
The Coast Guard is a unique military service in that it operates outside of the Dept. of Defense and has world-wide law enforcement responsibilities and authority. It was part of the Department of Treasury and Department of Transportation before being transferred to the Department of Homeland Security.
