Which maker reigns supreme?

When it comes to annual volume of briar sales, would it be Dr Grabow? Or is it more likely Peterson? Maybe Savinelli? How about Clay pipes? They've been around forever, but is there one brand that outsells them all?

Back in the 70's there was a book called "The Best of Everything" that purported to be the "expert" opinion on all possessions. Under pipes it listed the Peterson "Mark Twain".

Back in their heyday, GBD (Ganneval, Bondier & Donninger), were a prolific brand. The reason this is relevant today, is because these old estates are still readily available at very affordable price points. I love the old silver and brass rondells that most are adorned with, from my preferred era's.
These are ideal pipes for restoration purposes, and were available in a wide variety of shapes and designs. If you are looking for the collectible gems, look for the GBD's hand carved by Horry Jamison, the Xtras that have not been made since the 1930's, and the older cased GBD's are usually highly collectible.
