@Zouave Nice find, that looks like a lot of Sterling Silver..being a Zodiac sign of ♋️, I am ruled by the moon and silver.... I can’t help it that I 😍 the night and silver. Good thing I’m not a lycanthrope. Perks of your vocation. Very Cool.
@motie2 I was looking at several of those vintage unopened tins on EBAY and something caught my eye ... the comments that the tins are unopened and the price is reflective of the tins them self - but the contents are not for consumption. What the Hell does that mean? If the tins have been unopened, presumably once should expect there is tobacco inside. And aged tobacco is something prized by most pipe smokers is aged, so why would it be considered 'not for consumption'? Worse case scenario would be the tobacco might need to be re-hydrated. But when one reads a warning from the seller stating "not for consumption" ... it sends up a red flag.
@ghostsofpompeii EBay rules....can’t sell tobacco, so described as collector tin and tobacco “not for consumption” to “skirt” the rules. Be thankful, so far at least, that pipes can still be sold on EBay.
Im still just a novice at tobaccos, I found only a few descriptions of this on line. Can one of you guys tell me what this tobacco was like or what would be similar now? This can sat on top of my grandfather's refrigerator for as long as I can ever recall.
@Zouave Try looking at tobaccoreviews.com. I found the tin and there were a few reviews and suggestions that it now sold as Bourbon Street. However, the tobacco descriptions differ slightly with the new blend saying they contain small amounts of Latakia and Perique, which the original does not mention them. Maybe the amounts were to small to be included?
@RockyMountainBriar thanks I'll check it out. All I really dug up was it used to be an old Philip Moris brand. I will also look into Bourbon Street. Thanks again!
@motie2 Absolutely. I'm still looking for one of those 1 1/2 oz tins. I've found a few but the condition of the tin art was way too bad. My wife and I are antiquing tomorrow in Indiana Amish Country so there is always a chance I'll come across something at one of those antique or resale shops.
Back just before Christmas of 2018 my brother and I were browsing a local antique mall and were fortunate enough to find 3 tins of Velvet that dated pre-1970. They were full and one of them still had the coupon flyer insert with it. We took one of them and smoked it that night without re-hydrating it. The other two we re-hydrated and enjoyed slowly a little at a time. Today I found a tin of MacBaren Mixture Flake at a local B&M that dated 2012. I know it wasn't a vintage find, but it's still a darn smooth smoke. I'm enjoying the heck out of it right now!
@OlePops - Just got back from visiting our oldest son and his family up in Johnson City, TN. Struck estate pipe gold in Kingsport by finding an antique shop with about 50 pipes in it. I left with a Dunhill Red Bark I paid $54.
I'll have to figure out what the geographic center of Tennessee is so we can plan a trip up in that neighborhood.
I'm in Slidell, LA. 30 miles from New Orleans and about 5 miles from the Mississippi border.
@PappyJoe - Been there! Played music with Cajun Dave Becnel for a while and played all over LA. The geo' center of TN is a city called Murfreesboro. It is a college town. Pretty big place. Not hard to find 30 miles SE of Nashville. Found a $15 Yellow Bowl yesterday at the same antique mall where I saw the Velvet last fall, but I let it slide. I was in a bit of a hurry. It'll be there Monday. She knows I walked once, she'll drop It to $12.
@OlePops - The place in Kingsport had a Nording freehand, a Comoy, a Peterson, a Barling, a couple of Savinelli's and a couple of other higher end pipes. They also had a some Yellow Boles. I was also surprised to see a Dr. Grabow Westbrook (the line with the red spade logo).
One I missed seeing somehow was a Sasieni 4 Dot. A pipe smoker I know bought it the next day after I told him about the shop.
@OlePops - If I lived up there I probably would have kept it quiet. On the other hand, the guy who bought the Sasieni and one other pipe, is an associate member the New Orleans Pipe Club that I belong to. So I considered it sharing the wealth, so to speak.
So I have a question: I went to two different antique store. At on I bought a pipe that said Regency made in Italy. (See picture). The other was a Willard pipe that was in need of a lot of help.
I got both pipes totally cleaned up. The Willard I had to give an alcohol bath to to get it clean. I used wire bottle brushes to clean the inside of both. Gave both a soak in oxiclean and cleaned both with alcohol. I spent many hours on both and I like how they turned out.
On the Regency I cleaned the insides out and wet sanded the vulcanite stem to return it to black again from the light brown it was.
What else do do I need to do to them before I can smoke them. Sorry if this is a newbie type question, I want to make sue I do things right.

Nice piece of history and craftsmanship saved as well👍🏻 Sad to think that piece of silver work was headed to the scrap pile.
