I actually saw one at this past Chicago Pipe Show 5-2017. It was very unique and was still with it's original box. Not sure if it was new or not but was really interesting to look over. From what I gathered the idea was to let the bottom stem bend to rest on your chin like your discussion title and image. I am not sure how well it would work because you would have to clench the bit or button to hold onto it and the bend would act like a lever with the bowl at the other end. Wasn't made very long so maybe that is a sign of how it was accepted.

What was the point? So denture wearers could be clenchers? Let 'em be holders or sitters like many of the rest of us.....

I can't imagine wrestling a pipe cleaner through something like that. Can't believe they lasted 17 years before someone realized what a stupid idea it was.

@PappyJoe -- I had heard that one before, but it certainly bears refreshing in our minds.

Meanwhile, "decorative" doesn't begin to cover some of the wildly non-conformist tobacco pipes out there.

With all the time and effort that went into carving that Hitler pipe I can't imagine anyone actually buying it and then smoking it where someone could see them. Can you imagine the grief you'd get from passerby's.

And that design for the pipe with the curly-cue stems would not only be a bitch to run a pipe cleaner through - but you wouldn't be able to smoke an entire bowl of tobacco because of the placement of the stem in the bowl. The draw hole is in the middle of the bowl.

While I have had one pipe with a double bend like these (long since broken), it was a porcelain pipe with just enough shank to stick the rubber-grommeted stem into. That thing smoked HOT!!! no matter what the blend or cadence. The only coloring that occurred was a greyish mottling over maybe 25% of the exterior surface.

If you didn't like the stem, you could get someone to make a new stem. There might be an upcharge if the stem needed additional cost, due to the angle of the stem.

Or, just stick a pipe cleaner in the stem, carefully heat the stem with a hot-air gun and bend it how you like🙂
You could always bend it back too.
