I use some plastic & cork (wine bottle?) caps that I found at ACE Hardware. There were two size cork diameters. I just partially cut the bottom off of the cork. With the two diameters, they fit a wide variety of pipes if you are careful when inserting them. Multiple bowl diameters are close enough to get the corks to fit in several pipes. I have a few favorite “pocket pipes”, the Brebbia GO-GO in the picture is probably my very favorite, and “corking it up” for pocket transport with one of these caps is very secure. I have also cut some discs of high density foam like the white one in the picture that work pretty well, as long as the pipe is handled and stored more carefully. The tight fitting corks are good at snuffing a pipe, the HD Foam....I would not trust to snuff a pipe, just keep unlit tobacco in the chamber. I use the metal wind caps as well, they work great if you want to dry the fresh tobacco a bit before smoking. The corks keep the tobacco moisture level close to “as packed”. The corks are very sturdy and look almost like they were made for the pipes.
@Danfriedman Funny you should ask. I walk/smoke every morning to our neighborhood grocery store which has a Starbucks inside. I have been known to leave the unsmoked pipe in my mouth. I know to not smoke but often forget it’s in my mouth. I’ve never been asked about smoking, but I often get a positive comment from people who are intrigued or interested or just plain happy to see me with a pipe. It’s like silent marketing! 😀
I appreciate your response @Mangoandy. I will often keep my pipe exposed when in the coffee shop as well if it has not been recently smoked. When still hot or warm I am still not confident. The suggestion by @RockyMountainBriar is a great idea. I think the cork idea will possibly hide the smell and ash as well. I hope more people on the forum will consider getting out with a pipe.
@Danfriedman Literally, just walked in from an outdoor Sunday night neighborhood party. I took my pipe and smoked it the entire time around the firepit. More than one of the wives attending told me how much she loved the smell and wished her husband smoked a pipe. #pipemarketing
Don't mean to barge in here@Danfriedman, but that is a great story. Maybe you inspired someone to try pipe smoking male or female, it sounded like the perfect setting. Camp fire or pit, who could not dig that?
@Danfriedman, Yes indeed you did, glad you Recieved positive vibes, I'm one of those types that is reluctant to fire up in a public setting. Just have gotten so use to it, I don't think much about now. But good for you.
I don't smoke indoors, except in my house, you know: My house, My rules. Outside, is another thing, really don't care what others people think. But never got any complaint. People tell me that they like the smell.
I just ordered one of those dual fans you put in an open window, pulling out the side panels. It can bring air in (stupid In winter) or exhaust air. There's a rocking chair next to the window I have in mind. Who thinks SWMBO will let poor, pitiful me smoke in the house with the fan exhausting (most of) the smoke?
I smoke outdoors, in the good weather,, in my workshop which is in a detached garage in cooler weather,, some time on front porch,,,,never suggested smoking indoors, so wife is very happy, .. I don’t care for the phrase SWMBO because we have a partnership and it works.
