I legitimately failed to answer 4 out of 10, the fifth question I missed about the flaming pipe,I just find hard to believe. I was thinking of the scenarios that a pipe good catch on fire, throwing it in a camp fire,pouring lighter fluid on it and putting a flame to it, a house fire, putting it in your oven preheated to 375 degrees and on and on. Pardon the pun, but this might be burning question of the day. Even on the forum we had going awhile back about weird things happening while smoking a pipe, I don't recall any member stating that their pipe caught on fire before or during the simple act of enjoying the simple act of smoking a pipe. Just having some fun with this, feel free to comment if desired.
Seems to me a burn-out would be more of a smolder-through erosion over time? When I think of a pipe catching on fire, I imagine flames in front of my face. But there's no appeal process, alas.
The one pipe I had burnout happened about 3 minutes into the first bowl of a brand new Peterson Calabash. It burned through in about 10 seconds when the coal hit a void. I’m sure if I would have kept puffing, it would have been in flames. I sent the pipe back to Ireland and Peterson’s of Dublin sent me a new replacement, no questions asked. My new replacement Peterson Calabash and a subsequent Higher Grade Natural Peterson Calabash have had no issues at all. I could see a pipe going up in flames if a person was “determined”.
@PappyJoe, To answer your question, Howdo I think burn outs occur? I can only say I had no point of reference, I've never burnt a hole in a briar after 40 years of off and on smoking a pipe.So therefore the question on the quiz was baffled me. Now with your information and other contributions from members,I realize the question was not as ridiculous as it seemed to me at the time.
I thought it said pipe, that's why I questioned the question so to speak. At the time I couldn't conceive of a pipe going up in flames or burning.Well it was fun, Thank you for the response PappyJoe.
I have an etiquette question that has been on my mind for a long time. What do pipe smokers do when they need to enter a public building. When I go walking around town I often stop into stores and businesses. I normally let my pipe go out and stick it in my pocket. This works, but it sometimes is ashey. What do others do.
Well for me I generally park well away from a store or building I'm about to enter so I have time to take a few hits and despose of any ash that might be left over. I carry a small pointed file with me to despose of any ash in the pipe. Of course this is not a good idea if your not inclined to walk and park aways from your destination . I like probably many pipe smokers learned the hard way about putting a still smoking pipe in your pocket. If I feel the need to light up I just go outside to a people less environment and light up. Hope this helps.
I appreciate all of the replies to my question and welcome others to join in. I am always looking for ways to be considerate to the non-pipe community as an ambassador of the pipe community.
@danfriedman - I have snap-on pipe covers (or wind screens) and usually carry one with me if I'm out and about. I just snap it on to hold the ash in and stick the pipe in my pocket. smokingpipes.com has them for about $2.00 each.

@motie2 or @PappyJoe, are the pipe covers one size fits all or what? Never really thought about getting them, but it seems like a dam good idea to have a few around.
