Stripping and Staining a Pipe

Does anyone have any experience stripping and re-staining a pipe? I know I've heard to use leather stain not wood stain due to the chemicals.

Good question, I would like to add a question to your post if you don't mind....what do you do if you want to redo the whole pipe, outside and inside - stem and bowl?? Do you just burn in the bowl? I see new pipes with the inside kind of coated or burnt, not just sanded wood??

@wolf41035 as long as I am picturing the same thing your describing the inside of the bowl is coated not burned. I have heard it is a secret mix but I know some that make their own coating to put in their non coated pipes and make it from a mixture of water, honey, and cigar ash (fine tobacco ash). It helps to build cake and protect the bowl.

I recently bought and finished a Bones pipe. It was a fun little project. I used leather dye and carnauba wax.
