Hey all, going to Europe in a few months for my honeymoon! I have Milan on my list to visit the Savinelli shop. Any other "Pipe Pilgrimage" places I should aim to hit? I won't be going to the UK so no Peterson visit

@PappyJoe Primarily France/Italy, but may work on fitting in Munich for Oktoberfest. Perique liqueur!? That sounds interesting....

I had a glass when I had a meeting with Mark Ryan, owner of the L.A. Poche Perique processing plant in St. James Parish last month. Very smooth and tasty.

A lot of great progressive rock bands are from Europe and seldom venture to our shores. So if you happen to see a band like IQ playing a concert near where you are visiting, grab a few tickets and enjoy the show.

@Oddjob27 I highly recommend you attend Oktoberfest!! I went last year. One of the greatest experiences of my life. Wonderful people from all around the world, music, of course beer and gemütlichkeit! You will not be disappointed. Free advice if you'd like it !

Congrats @Oddjob27 ! From what I remember with my trip to Italy, I saw a tobacco shop in Venice that sold unfinished Savinelli's. But if you're going to their factory, then you'll probably have a better selection than what I saw. I'd read up on all the Italian pipe makers out there and see where they're located. As for France, I don't have as much experience there, but Chacom would be a good choice to investigate. Maybe Butz-Choquin?

I know this is a pipe and tobacco site, but when I think of taking a trip to Italy the first thing that comes to mind is not a Savinelli Pipe but fine dining in an authentic Italian restaurant.

@thebadgerpiper I decided not to go to Savinelli, but will be going to the Novelli shop in Rome as seen on (

Just got back from England/France - I was disappointed to find pipe tobacco was sparse. Made it to Dunhill and James J. Fox on St.James Street in London. They were both were worth stopping by. I also made it to Havana House in Oxford. It was a very small shop. How could this be the country of origin for English tobaccos?

I used to be a regular smoker of James J. Fox blends and actually had 5 different blends in my rotation - The Bankers Mixture, Provost Mixture, Campanile, Dorisco and Hibernia. Provost, Campanile and Dorisco are all 4-Star rated blends on tobaccoreview.com. I'm going to have to revisit them when I make my next on-line purchase.

@Mangoandy I guess many of us base our assumptions on the many tobacco shops of England from old movies we've seen. Seems like there would be one on every corner. I suppose many of them have been replace with a Starbucks Coffee Shop.

From my experience, Germany is the country you want to go if you're interested in pipe tobacco. It wasn't uncommon for me to find places to buy pipe tobacco, even in train stations. This wasn't just the normal gas station stuff, but MacBaren pouches. There's Ireland too for Petersons, as they even carried Petes in souvenir shops.

@ghostsofpompeii - Salmon & Gluckstein was the "Starbucks" of England at the turn of the 1900's until they sold out in 1950. They were 140 Salmon & Gluckstein tobacco shops in England at one time.
