All veteran pipe smokers have been there...you have a non-sitter and are out having a pipe that you need to put down for one reason or another. What are your most crafty pipe stands that you have used?
I've made several from leather scraps that I have trimmed into 8" by 1.5" pieces and laced the end together. You can put it in your pocket and pull it out to set your pipe in. I will post a photo later.
If your going for lazy... I have a washcloth that I rolled and put the end together with a rubber band. Otherwise I just bought a leather pipe rest from legendarysaxon.com and a churchwarden pipe pouch. I have been known to use the stem to stand up against things when I don't have a stand on hand. And sometimes on my straight pipes I'll even set them down and set my bag on top of the stem to it doesn't fall over. (Typing while working so I'm scattered). I've also been known to use my ziplock with tobacco in it, make a divet in it so there is a place for it to rest.
In the shop I have some soft jaws on my vise with a vertical cut out for holding round stock. So I just open the vise up enough for the pipe to fit in the arcs of the soft jaws and the stem rests on top of them. I wanna make a few like @pappyjoe and leave one everywhere I smoke, just haven't found the time yet.
@pappyjoe Thanks for the inspiration! Over the weekend I made one similar to the pic you posted and it works wonderfully. I'd post a pic but I'm still having trouble posting pictures.
@mhajec no sir, I took a machining course in college, I enjoyed the class but not my profession and don't have the right tooling for it. I am an Electroplater by trade(chrome plating and other types of plating), but I enjoy creating things. Mainly woodworking, but I dabble in a little bit of everything.
@darmon I was just teasing even though that would be kind of cool just as a piece of art to hang on the wall or set on the desk. A nice cheap estate pipe that has seen better days... I'd be scared of the chemicals as well.
Not only just the chemicals but chrome plating doesn't adhere well to wood. You'd have to make a pipe out of metal and then it might work. Interesting idea though.
