Is Smoker's Pride decent? Haha. I'm going to be hosting an event soon for a group of my friends who are interested in wanting to try pipe smoking. So I thought buying some cheaper bulk blends would be a good way to start them off. That way, I'm not out too much money and if they like it they can take as much as they want. Haha.
@Oddjob27, if I was going to do that, I would get about 2 ounces (at most) of each of maybe six decent bulks - ones that I enjoyed. You could probably do that for about $25. People can't load up, but they can try things, and see what is what.
@Oddjob27, that's awesome! Let us know how it went. Id be curious to learn what your friends think about the whole pipe thing. Are your friends all smokers? Not that it matters, I never was. I never hosted a pipe gathering but I do host bourbon tasting here...it's pretty fun.
Welcome @BlueCollarBastard! Nice selection you got there! Can't wait for your mail call! haha
@buflosab@Londy3 Hasn't happened yet, but I'm preparing for it. A lot of my friends aren't smokers, some still are, but a lot have shown interest because they see me piping and another friend of mine piping as well. I'll throw something up after it happens. Thanks for the support though! I also do have about 3/4lb left of Lane 1-Q that I'd gladly share with them. Haha.
@BlueCollarBastard "Cellar Reserve", "Blood Red Moon" and "Eileen's Dream" are all in my cellar and part of my rotation. Enjoy them all. As for "Cellar Reserve", if you enjoy that be sure to pick up "Officer's Club" - it's my favorite from East India Trading Company. Every time I get ready to smoke it my wife wants a sniff of the tin note ... she loves it and said she love to have an open can of that to use as potpourri. My good friend @motie2 wasn't as impressed with it as I - but it is currently my favorite blend. I enjoy all three of the East India Trading Company blends. Sadly the price has gone up at P&C, where I've usually bought mine. I've been paying $6.99 and now the price is $9.25. But it appears all the tins have gone up a buck or two since last year. Keep an eye out for sales. P&C has a variety of 20% off sales throughout the year and that's a great time to stock up.
@ghostsofpompeii hopefully i will like it. My wife thinks I'm getting crazy with it. I can't stop looking at websites. I haven't received my order yet and i want to order more. So many different varieties. I want them all. Got to work some overtime.
@Oddjob27 For your gathering you might also consider Virginia Gold 9oz bags. Their cheap and not bad. I often use their black Cavendish either as a stand alone or use it to blend with other blends that I wind up being not too fond of... Just a suggestion...
@Oddjob27 That's very cool that you're introducing your friends to pipe smoking. You might want to check out Missouri Meerschaum's smokable seconds grab bag from their website. You'll get a ton of corncob pipes for a great price.
I would recommend that you steer away from Smoker's Pride, though. I got a free pouch from P&C from my first IPSD grab bag, and though it had a nice aroma, it was one of the worst smoking experiences I've had. I actually apologized to my pipe afterwards. Go for bulk Lane 1Q as a first pipe smoking experience, as it's a reasonable price.
I would second the motion for 1-Q. You can typically get it inexpensively, and it is the best seller for a reason.
Though, I like my Burley, so I would also throw in a recommendation for Two Timer from Daughters and Ryan. They have some good tins for a lower price tag.
I really don't think 1Q is all that and a bag of chips. Still can't understand why people say newbies should start there. I think there are much better tasting ones to try like even LL7 or one of the aros like CBRM. ... first impressions you know...
I tried 1-Q based on its popularity. For me it was too much tobacco flavor and not enough of the aromatic flavor. Of course, I'm a wuss when it comes to tobacco.
I have a pound of 1-Q sitting in my room, so I'll just use that. 1-Q isn't bad, but it isn't great. I do think it's a good choice as an introduction tobacco. It is one of the top selling in the world after all.. haha
I recommend Lane 1Q because my first pipe tobacco was Boswell's Best, which I've heard is 1Q, just renamed. Everyone won't have the same experience smoking the same blend, but 1Q is a favorite for a reason. Part of it is that the aroma has that "pipe smell" that people are fond of.
I bought a pouch of Mixture 79 at the end of last year. I smoked one bowl and decided it wasn't going to be in my regular rotation. If somebody really loves the stuff, I'd be glad to and them the rest of the pouch.
